Publisher's Summary

Former Prime Minister Theresa May exposes the abuse of power by public institutions and politicians in a series of riveting first-hand accounts from her time in office.

As Prime Minister for three years and Home Secretary for six years, Theresa May confronted a series of issues in which the abuse of power led to devastating results for individuals and significantly damaged the reputation of, and trust in, public institutions and politicians. From the Hillsborough and Grenfell tragedies, to the Daniel Morgan case and parliamentary scandals, the powerful repeatedly chose to use their power not in the interests of the powerless but to serve themselves or to protect the organisation to which they belonged.

The Abuse of Power is a searing exposé of injustice and an impassioned call to exercise power for the greater good. Drawing on examples from domestic and international affairs she was personally involved in at the highest level, including Stop and Search and the Salisbury Poisonings, the former prime minister argues for a radical rethink in how we approach our politics and public life.

Strong thematic overview of public service

Evokes George W Bush’s “Decision Points” by providing insights into key philosophies, analytical lenses, and clear examples of applied political leadership (or lack thereof) - from someone who held the pen and made these decisions, insights are invaluable while crafting a strong case for service leadership in public life.

A fascinating and Timely Overview

This review of events from recent history from the perspective of use and abuse of power is both disturbing and hopeful. Theresa May has an excellent speaking voice. The west sorely needs more Politicians with her wisdom and integrity and her ability to communicate.

Honest and authentic storyline

I loved the honest account from Theresa May and learnt so much about the various events/disasters that occurred over the time she was Home Secretary and Prime Minister. I must admit I listened to a large part of this audio book whilst on an exercise routine on the gym floor. I realised I was letting out a few gasps of astonishment on learning many of the facts surrounding these events awful as they were, on hearing the background made them so much worse.
Theresa’s narration of her book was excellent and I loved listening to her lovely spoken English. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning some of the truths around our western democracy governments.
