Publisher's Summary

In the tradition of Phil Knight's Shoe Dog comes the incredible untold story of how Netflix went from concept to company - all revealed by cofounder and first CEO Marc Randolph.

Once upon a time, brick-and-mortar video stores were king. Late fees were ubiquitous, video streaming unheard of, and widespread DVD adoption seemed about as imminent as flying cars. These were the widely accepted laws of the land in 1997, when Marc Randolph had an idea.

It was a simple thought - leveraging the internet to rent movies - and was just one of many more proposals, like personalised baseball bats and a shampoo delivery service, that Randolph would pitch to his business partner, Reed Hastings, on their commute to work each morning.

But Hastings was intrigued, and the pair - with Hastings as the primary investor and Randolph as the CEO - founded a company.

Now with over 150 million subscribers, Netflix's triumph feels inevitable, but the 21st century's most disruptive start-up began with few believers and calamity at every turn. From having to pitch his own mother on being an early investor, to the motel conference room that served as a first office, to server crashes on launch day, to the now-infamous meeting when they pitched Blockbuster to acquire them, Marc Randolph's transformational journey exemplifies how anyone with grit, gut instincts and determination can change the world - even with an idea that many think will never work.

What emerges, however, isn't just the inside story of one of the world's most iconic companies. Full of counterintuitive concepts and written in binge-worthy prose, it answers some of our most fundamental questions about taking that leap of faith in business or in life: How do you begin? How do you weather disappointment and failure? How do you deal with success? What even is success?

From idea generation to team building to knowing when it's time to let go, That Will Never Work is not only the ultimate follow-your-dreams parable but also one of the most dramatic and insightful entrepreneurial stories of our time.

An inspiring story in an incredible amount of detail

I loved this book (and have read many like it)as I found this one to be particularly relatable, going into detail about how problems were solved and describing key milestones and decisions that shaped the company. You can’t help but realise how seemingly small decisions were so important to the eventual success of Netflix.

Netflix Origins - The Early Beginnings

This audiobook is the origin story of how Marc Randolph formed Netflix. It gives a behind the scene view into how Netflix grew/survived through the early dot com boom and its eventual crash. It gives a insiders look into how the company ran its business and how it got through its teething stage.

The book also is useful for those who are interested in starting their own company, as Marc shares a lot of personal tips and tricks from his perspective of running a business. It's not a book about how perfect his decisions were, but an honest perspective of the successes and failures Marc has encountered while he was CEO at Netflix and other various roles.

All n all I liked the book and found it quite interesting, especially the insider knowledge being shared. and the charisma shown by the author. If your interested in business mumbo jumbo. this is the book for you.

one word ... Boring

Was hoping it would get better, but couldn't get past chapter 6. Excruciatingly boring and verbose.

Great story and performance

A great story told in a very gribbing and enthusiastic way. A true page-turner, that just makes you want to take an extra round around the block, to hear a bit more. Fantastic and will probably hear it again at some stage.
Whether for the history of Netflix, to know more of the way an entrepeneurical company is established or just a good read - I recommend this all the way !

Brilliant!

Wow.... I was totally hooked from beginning to end! Such a fantastic recount of the history behind Netflix and it’s awesome to hear it read by Marc himself, not only does he have the perfect voice for it, it really makes you feel as though he’s sharing his story with you personally.

As a small business owner, there were so many ‘yuuup couldn’t agree more!!’ moments in relation to some of the entrepreneurial reflections and it was inspiring to hear of the challenges they faced as a team, the tests they did and how ideas evolved. Highly recommend!

I even bought the book itself

I was expecting your typical business book written by a Silicon Valley-entrepreneur, but it was the total opposite. Marc Randolph is extremely down to earth and gives business tips you can apply at any stage of your career. And he's a great narrator as well with a funny Boston accent. After listening to the audiobook I went out and bought the actual book to highlights some quotes, tips and tricks. I will keep it at my desk for inspiration and motivation.

Be in love the problem, not the solution.

What an insightful journey through the birth of an idea, it's reiteration and evolution. This book could easily be a handbook for start-ups. Thank you for sharing your memoirs with us Marc. It's easy to tell the struggles. It's easy to tell the success. Thank you though for teaching us the switch.

As an Author myself, and a guy who helps leaders hack culture and strategy, my heart warmed every time you talked about staying true to the NETFLIX culture, specially in the tough times.

Highly recommended.

Cheers, Dave

A good, but long book about the founder of Netflix

After completing the book I liked it (partly because Netflix really interests me), but in some parts the book became overly detailed and could be more to the point. The book for a large part covers Marc Randolph's private life and way of thinking and could be more focused on Netflix.

50 per cent tedious anecdotes.

This had such terrific reviews I was surprised by how bad it was. There's about an hour or two of useful business information on Netflix, that is the early dvd days, not the modern netflix as we know it. The rest is filled with the most dull stories of marcs life in the style of a cheap paperback thriller without the thrills. Also the little fake laughs throughout are embarrassing and painful to listen to.

I don't usually write bad reviews but this is one of the worst business books i've read or heard.

Lastly, Marc is so keen to tell us all the minute details of his life but then fails to give up how much he earned on selling his shares after the ipo. funny that. I guess money just isn't important to him. (insert fake laugh).

Forward & Emotional

The way Marc reads this is insane. Putting in full energy and emotion, making it a very immersive listen, as if you're a fly on the wall at all points. Not to mention the super insightful, practical advice/information scattered throughout, especially at the end.

Marc, you're a true MVP. Thank you for this book.

I almost teared up at the end.

Please tly surprised to find out this was actually narrated by Marc Randolph himself.
I found the book captivating and insightful.

This book would suit both a hopeful or newbie entrepreneur or someone just generally interested in the Netflix journey from a simple brain fart idea to the behemoth it is today.

I felt connected to Marc's story and even got close to tearing up at points in the final chapter.
I've decided to listen to it again in case I missed any nuggets.

Well worth a listen or read!
