Publisher's Summary

In the tradition of Phil Knight's Shoe Dog comes the incredible untold story of how Netflix went from concept to company - all revealed by cofounder and first CEO Marc Randolph.

Once upon a time, brick-and-mortar video stores were king. Late fees were ubiquitous, video streaming unheard of, and widespread DVD adoption seemed about as imminent as flying cars. These were the widely accepted laws of the land in 1997, when Marc Randolph had an idea.

It was a simple thought - leveraging the internet to rent movies - and was just one of many more proposals, like personalised baseball bats and a shampoo delivery service, that Randolph would pitch to his business partner, Reed Hastings, on their commute to work each morning.

But Hastings was intrigued, and the pair - with Hastings as the primary investor and Randolph as the CEO - founded a company.

Now with over 150 million subscribers, Netflix's triumph feels inevitable, but the 21st century's most disruptive start-up began with few believers and calamity at every turn. From having to pitch his own mother on being an early investor, to the motel conference room that served as a first office, to server crashes on launch day, to the now-infamous meeting when they pitched Blockbuster to acquire them, Marc Randolph's transformational journey exemplifies how anyone with grit, gut instincts and determination can change the world - even with an idea that many think will never work.

What emerges, however, isn't just the inside story of one of the world's most iconic companies. Full of counterintuitive concepts and written in binge-worthy prose, it answers some of our most fundamental questions about taking that leap of faith in business or in life: How do you begin? How do you weather disappointment and failure? How do you deal with success? What even is success?

From idea generation to team building to knowing when it's time to let go, That Will Never Work is not only the ultimate follow-your-dreams parable but also one of the most dramatic and insightful entrepreneurial stories of our time.

Insightful David vs Goliath Story - Good Insight

A good listen to anyone with Entrepreneurial aspirations, It is great that Marc Randolph narrates the audiobook, which gives it a more intriguing listen as it is straight from the first CEO. A little slow at times, but a great overall depiction of how technology developed and took over an industry with Netflix at the forefront. There are a couple of things that when left unanswered and I would have loved to hear a bit more regarding Netflix post 2003 as they reached their tipping point.

My absolute favourite digital company story!

Marc Randolph delivers Netflix's story in all it's entirety. I could not turn it off and looked forward to each new binge listening session of it. Like all comprehensive stories he covered everything from the day of conception through to his retirement and slightly beyond his days at the company. There are some absolute CEO & Entrepreneur gems of advice and examples in there that can benefit anyone in life. Engaging narration keeps you really listening to the story.

Not a start-up textbook

If you're one of those hyper boring people looking for a textbook on how to succeed, don't waste your time. This is so much more than that. This book portrays a human, with human emotions, that just happened to have one of the biggest ideas of the last 20 years. It's a well written, flowing narrative that I would happily recommend to anyone

I even bought the book itself

I was expecting your typical business book written by a Silicon Valley-entrepreneur, but it was the total opposite. Marc Randolph is extremely down to earth and gives business tips you can apply at any stage of your career. And he's a great narrator as well with a funny Boston accent. After listening to the audiobook I went out and bought the actual book to highlights some quotes, tips and tricks. I will keep it at my desk for inspiration and motivation.

From startup to behemoth.

A most interesting book as told by the author himself. Fantastic. As a subscriber of Netflix, it’s interesting to know how it got there. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Tech Giants!

Awesome read for anyone who’s interested in the birth of arguably one of the greatest tech start ups of our generation. Mark goes into detail of the highs and lows of the company with a real life view of juggling investors, family and a concept company.

Be in love the problem, not the solution.

What an insightful journey through the birth of an idea, it's reiteration and evolution. This book could easily be a handbook for start-ups. Thank you for sharing your memoirs with us Marc. It's easy to tell the struggles. It's easy to tell the success. Thank you though for teaching us the switch. As an Author myself, and a guy who helps leaders hack culture and strategy, my heart warmed every time you talked about staying true to the NETFLIX culture, specially in the tough times. Highly recommended. Cheers, Dave

Authentically told and with provocation at the end

Marc reads this book himself and it's a great business book but also a show him as a real person and his worries during the early days - the school fees, being there for his kids and a family man at heart. Some simple lessons about always learning is a good challenge for all of us.

Look behind the scenes

I really enjoyed listening to this book, was captivated since tried out the sample. Marc Randolph has a great narrative voice, didn't put me to sleep and provided great education on building of the startup, the parts, that are not so commonly known. Thank you, Mr Randolph for following your dream and for openly sharing your and your colleagues story with us.

It is always impossible until it’s done

This quote from Nelson Mandela that I used on the title of this review is was I felt reading ( listening) this book. With so many things that could go wrong and went wrong, it was more about the path description and not the end destination that made you enjoy this audiobook. This is the real proof that ordinary people can make the difference if we’re in the right time at the right place.
