Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Sian Clifford, star of Fleabag and Vanity Fair. This definitive recording includes an introduction by Margaret R. Higonnet.

When Tess Durbeyfield is driven by family poverty to claim kinship with the wealthy D'Urbervilles and seek a portion of their family fortune, meeting her 'cousin' Alec proves to be her downfall. A very different man, Angel Clare, seems to offer her love and salvation, but Tess must choose whether to reveal her past or remain silent in the hope of a peaceful future.

With its sensitive depiction of the wronged Tess and powerful criticism of social convention, Tess of the D'Urbervilles is one of the most moving and poetic of Hardy's novels.

A delight to listen to.

A classic, read by my new favourite narrator. Honestly the most melodious re-telling I’ve encountered in my audible history. Beautifully read by Sian Clifford. She captures and conveys, so deftly, the nuances of Hardy’s novel - the nature of Tess, and of all characters, and the tragedy that befalls her. Exceptional. Please narrate more such novels, Sian!

Brilliantly narrated

I’d never read the book as I never felt like I had enough time. Listening to the audiobook instead was a pleasure, and Sian Clifford’s narration brings the characters to life in a way I couldn’t have. Highly recommended.

Wasted youth!!

Why didn't I listen to my English teacher. Beautiful story, Hardy at his best. The narration was excellent fitting the mood of the story without the melodramatic change in gone applied to many audiobooks read by actors.
