In Tess, la protagonista è una fanciulla di campagna che discende da una nobile famiglia decaduta e di cui il destino le farà scontare le colpe. La denuncia sociale che condanna la mentalità vittoriana, che mette al bando le donne “con un passato” è una parte importante del libro.
