Publisher's Summary

Gangland boss Zander Finn is so sickened by the brutal murder of his son in a Paisley pub, he decides to change his life. Following the advice of his priest and mentor, he moves clandestinely to London and becomes an ambulance driver. But when his old second-in-command, Malky Maloney, tracks him down on a London street, Finn knows he must return. Both his real family and his crime family face an existential threat from Albanian mobsters determined to take control of the Scottish underworld.

Under the watchful eye of his charismatic mother, he must try to look after his lovelorn younger daughter and her older sister, who is pregnant to his old enemy Joe Mannion’s son. His estranged wife, who has more than just a business relationship with Mannion, and his remaining son, crippled while serving in Afghanistan, also require his attention. But most of all, he must take back what is his.

Critic Reviews

"A rollicking rollercoaster of violence, misplaced loyalties and some very unexpected interventions that combine to produce one of the most satisfying gangland thrillers of the year." (Irish Independent)

"Meyrick’s breaking the mould with the latest offering straight out of the underworld of Paisley and the gritty streets of London." (Sunday Post)

"A winning combination of fisticuffs and philosophy." (Mark Sanderson, Times and Sunday Times Crime Club)

Good story---but.

Found this a reasonable story and enjoy Denzils writing. I just found the language a little off putting. Narration was ok. So just a little disappointing

Gripping, if grim

It’s hard not to like Zander Finn, despite what he is and what he does. Even though he’s the bad guy, he’s the least bad of some very unpleasant characters, and I wanted him to triumph, even as he devised multiple murders. It’s grim going though, through deception, betrayal, torture, and violent death. Very different to the DCI Daley & DS Brian Scott series, but worth sticking with it through the gore. Characteristically, Denzil Meyrick’s writing is fast moving, and gripping, and the characters are sharply drawn. Zander’s mother is a chain smoking delight, who brings the book much of its dark humour.

Angus King, as with everything he narrates, gives an inspired performance that brings the printed page to life.

Sensational

I am a fan of the Author. But this one is not to be missed even if you're not, it's funny and the characters are unforgettably flawed. Loved it.

Brilliant, even without DCI Daley!

Being such a fan of Jim and Brian, I was a bit doubtful at first but was soon enjoying this tale of family-based gang warfare (not normally my thing). Main character Sander Finn reminded me of Rankin's Big Ger, a rogue, a violent criminal but somehow a likeable one that we could almost identify with!

Disappointing

I usually enjoy Denzil Meyrick's books but couldn't persevere past the first few chapters of this book. Very disappointed.

Another Terrific Book By Denzil Meyrick

Great story. Could envision each character. Lots of plot twists. Angus King's narration adds to the reader's enjoyment. Couldn't put it down. Hoping for a sequel.

Much talk, unpleasant characters, depressing storyline

I love Denzil’s DCI Daley stories but I found this just too unpleasant and depressing to even listen to. The main character also seemed too lightweight to be a major gangland boss.

I’d rather not write negative reviews because the author has obviously put a lot of work in, but it’s only fair for others that reviews are truthful.

A Triumph

When you have become close and invested in familiar characters, as with DCI Daley and his sidekick, Scott, in Denzil Meyrick's brilliant series, there are always some nerves when new people are introduced. I'm also not a huge fan of gangland books, so approached Terms of Restitution with trepidation. Within a few chapters I was hooked and ended up listening to the entire 10 hours and 29 minutes in one session! (In fact, I was sitting in the car outside the venue for a friend's wedding whilst my beleaguered husband was telling me how late we were and I was insisting there were only 5 minutes left). Angus King, a voice performer I've heard on many audio books, turned in his usual wonderful and nuanced performance. He's always worth listening to even if he's merely reading out the phone book. However, Terms of Restitution is way, way more than the phone book. You are presented with a multi-layered tale full of rich characters, pithy dialogue and plenty of wit and warmth. I feel I should applaud Mr Meyrick for taking a risk on a new genre and characters and giving us such a special gift of a book.

brilliant story and narration

I'm a huge fan of Meyrick's work and love David Monteath's narration of his DCI Daley books. However Angus King is also a brilliant narrator and he brought the story and characters to life perfectly. I was hooked throughout.
Denzil Meyrick's characters are always so enjoyable, well rounded, they feel like old friends. The humour is always brilliantly placed and paced, reflecting how real people deal with life and the plot is always clever, you can never tell where the things are going to end up.

There were a couple of times where I got a bit lost, mainly when it referred to the younger priest, but I think that's because I was listening on Audible, and listening is a different way of consuming a story than reading the actual book.
Hoping we can hear more tales of Zander Finn.
You won't be disappointed if you buy this book.

Hard to follow

I can't imagine how hard it must be to write a book, let alone narrate one as well as Angus King - however, I found this particular book hard to 'get into'.
I tried hard, but by the 12th Chapter, I lost interest. Very sorry for such a negative review, just too much chopping and changing for my taste.

The dream team.

Denzil Meyrick never disappoints, another richly told tale interwoven with black humour and grit. Brought to life wonderfully by the excellent narration of Angus King.
I have a few authors I consider a must buy when a new book is released, Denzil Meyrick is right up there.
Highly recommend

Superb

Great narration by Angus King, really brought the wonderful characters to life. Maggie Finn is hilarious, I'd love to share chips, eggs and beans with her.

Brilliantly written by Denzil Meyrick, tells the take of two 'families ' each out for revenge. Humour and violence run parallel in this tough world.

Amazing, just hope this is not a standalone.
