Such a great combination of story and narrator!

A great, self-contained story in the world of Conrad Clarke and the King's Watch. It has a warm, romantic thread to it, in the middle of a great supernatural mystery. I want to call it an adventure, but that might mislead people who are expecting more a high speed thriller. Nonetheless, the adventure aspect is there. The story picks up elements from the previous books, but you don't need to have read them. And the conclusion is a complete, satisfying ending, even though Conrad's story continues.

But it's the narration that's really gotten to me. I read the book a while back, but listening to Ciaran Saward, it's like I'm re-listening to the book. His voice is so good, that somehow he's become the voice of the characters - even in the books that I haven't listened to as audiobooks! I think he's going to be the next Peter Lee or George Guidall.

Fairly sure the protagonist is a tory…

I haven’t come across a series of fantasy novels that are quite so brazen about their investment in British conservative tropes. The military. The police. The country pile. The ancestor worship of the aristocracy. Princess Ann even makes an appearance. Unfortunately, I am an anti-royalist who is allergic to tories, so I have been feeling increasingly itchy and uncomfortable from around book two. Hayden has tempered / disguised these tendencies with an ensemble cast of ethnics and strong women, but by the royal medal presentation ceremony at the end I’d had enough.

Shame, as the world building is pretty good and some of the characterisation is tangy too. The fantasy series for those who think the British Empire was a jolly good thing.
