About this listen

Children of all ages are grappling with anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and behavioural issues and it can take years to see an expert who can help them.

Dr Billy Garvey is a senior specialist at one of the world's biggest and most prestigious paediatric hospitals. With over twenty years' experience working with families, he wants to reassure parents that there is no such thing as a bad child and that much of what he tells families in clinic is based on the same principles he outlines in this book. Regardless of whether you have a young child or a teen on the brink of adulthood, by understanding the foundations of good mental health you will be able to help them to thrive at any stage in their development.

After listening to the podcast Pop Culture Parenting for months, my husband and I saw Billy’s book and knew we had to listen. The advice, detail, explanation, strategies and scenarios are invaluable. As a parent we often feel at a loss and like we are doing the wrong thing all the time, listening to this book helped me realise that it’s the little things that I can do and change in my parenting that will make the difference. Billy lays it out in a way that is easy to follow and is empowering, and I found myself pausing the book to make notes and write things down frequently. It also helped me and my husband reflect on our own childhood and issues that have arisen as adults and in our own parenting because of not being shown how to regulate and actually feel emotions rather than suppress. Thank you Billy, as you mention in your dedication that you hope this will help your children by helping their peers, you have achieved this and we are so grateful. Thank you so much. I cannot recommend this book enough. Every parent should read this, what a generation we will raise with this tool in our bank.

It was an honour to listen to such an amazing, caring professional who cares deeply about our children and helps guide us into being the best help and support we can be to all children, not just our own. I've come away with a profound sense of peace and connection knowing what I must continue putting into practise. A must read for all parents, especially those that don't think they need to read this book.

Dr Billy Garvey provides a thorough and practical insight into key aspects of parenting for all ages, with a focus on promoting mental health. His approach is honest and realistic, and emanates hope for all children, and, all parents. This book has become one of my bibles for parenting foundations, and will be a tool I continue to revisit in my own reflective practice towards parenting.

This is the most insightful book I’ve read about how to support a child’s/teen’s mental health, and I’ve read most of the books. Please read this book if you’re supporting a child/teen. This book will be the best investment of your time. Thank you Dr Garvey!
