Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now by Jaron Lanier, read by Oliver Wyman.

Jaron Lanier, the world-famous Silicon Valley scientist-pioneer and 'high-tech genius' (Sunday Times) who first alerted us to the dangers of social media, explains why its toxic effects are at the heart of its design and explains in 10 simple arguments why liberating yourself from its hold will transform your life and the world for the better.

Social media is making us sadder, angrier, less empathetic, more fearful, more isolated and more tribal. In recent months it has become horribly clear that social media is not bringing us together - it is tearing us apart. In Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now, Jaron Lanier draws on his insider's expertise to explain precisely how social media works - by deploying constant surveillance and subconscious manipulation of its users - and why its cruel and dangerous effects are at the heart of its current business model and design. As well as offering 10 simple arguments for liberating yourself from its addictive hold, his witty and urgent manifesto outlines a vision for an alternative that provides all the benefits of social media without the harm.

So, if you want a happier life, a more just and peaceful world, or merely the chance to think for yourself without being monitored and influenced by the richest corporations in history, then the best thing you can do, for now, is delete your social media accounts - right now. You will almost certainly become a calmer and possibly a nicer person in the process.

Essential read

Very moderate, bipartisan and even commentary on the present state of social media as it relates to politics, social structure, current events and society. The author is well informed whilst remainly firmly in his own lane. An interesting and slightly terrifying read that is well thought out and well worth it.

Just get it and listen to it.

In keeping with my reduced attention span this book is small by most standards. Its easy to understand and the arguments presented for me were solid. Ironically I found this author on youtube was impressed by his TED talk and other items. This book is great work.

I feel 5 star reviews were inflated by algorithm

Jaron's interview for the promotion of the book offered more insight. I would recommend those over this audiobook.

Mandatory read for our era

I highly recommend this book. This book was written by one of the most brilliant minds of Silicon Valley. Someone who knows tricks of the trade and is An insider when it comes to social media companies. The problem which he choose to talk about in this book Is a source of vexation for almost who has a smart phone in their pocket.

Interesting books, nicely read

And I enjoyed it, in big part thanks to the reading and the optimistic look, while talking about such issues. I do want to note I see gaps in the narrative - he keeps talking about how social media is bad, as if TV and newspaper are perfect - yet I believe this is far from being true ( see 1984 written much before social media). Anything you consume is provided by someone with interests, and in FB I actually understand better who wrote each thing. Still, lots of interesting read.

I did quit facebook on the basis of this book.

It's already been an eye-opening experience. The unhappiness and stress its caused me, being hyperconnected on social networks, has not been particularly helpful personally so its an experiment of challenge. Here's to face to face reality and the wonder and magic of simply dreaming. I was ready for some positive disruption and thanks to Lanier I have started writing and playing music again. Now that is what I call radical action! 😊

An in depth exploration of what I have suspected for a long time

I deleted my social media accounts some months ago due to some of the concerns raised by the author in this book and, at the time, had no knowledge of the books existence. Having now read the book I can only say one thing..... I AM NOT SORRY!

It’s a must read

To get a better understanding of the book I will be listening to it again I usually do this with all of the books that I listen to as sometimes that you miss things and misunderstand certain important keys. Generally overall it’s a good book and I’ve been off social media so this is reinforced my belief.

This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to use social media

Brilliant and informative. This should be part of or replace the t&c of social media sites. You will be wiser for reading this book. I’ve gifted several people already.

I'm deleting all but LinkedIn with 30 days

I'm recently Google free. Secure email in Germany, Lineage OS on my phones with no Google at all and I now host my own cloud, office and notes via NextCloud. I will admit, I've never been active on Social Media so deleting my accounts is not such a big deal, but before I do, there is one last message to broadcast, Read This Book!

Enjoyable until

Was enjoying listening until he brought up vaccines and stated his opinions as facts. Why on earth a tech guy felt he knew best about vaccines is beyond me. Ruined the whole thing for me

worth a listen

Some good, interesting, and convincing points made. Gets slightly boring after a while to hear for the 1000th time that "these guys who work in silicone valley aren't bad people!" I got the point the first time.
