Seine grundlegende Idee besteht in der Vorstellung vom Kreislauf des Kosmos. Kosmos wird erfahrbar durch Betrachtung des beobachtbaren Einzelnen. Die unauflösbare Einheit des Kosmos ist zugleich polar strukturiert. Deren allgemeinste Kategorien bestehen in Yin (das Weibliche, Passive, Dunkle) und Yang (das Männliche, Aktive, Helle). Ein ständiger Wechsel von Spannung und Ausgleich ist die Folge. Rückkehr ist die einzige Bewegung des Tao, Rückkehr zum jeweiligen Gegenteil. Von allen Werken der chinesischen Literatur ist das Tao te King das bekannteste Werk im europäischen Sprachraum.
