Publisher's Summary

Wise yet worldly, spiritual yet practical, the Tao Te Ching is beloved by seekers all the world over. This new edition features a lucid, poetic translation that makes the Tao Te Ching accessible to contemporary listeners.

The Tao Te Ching is a series of meditations on the mysterious nature of the Tao - the way, the guiding light, the very source of all existence. According to Lao Tzu (a name meaning "the old master"), the Tao is found where we would least expect it - not in the strong but in the weak; not in speech but in silence; not in doing but in "not-doing".

Worth Listening Again and Again

This is a beautiful translation of the Tao Te Ching that is beautifully read by someone who has an understanding of what she is reading. I have listened to several translations with different readers. I have also read the Tao in many forms. This one is outstanding and I will relisten frequently.

Slave Morality

Like Christianity, this philosophy praises those who are small and sad, saying they'll have the best life, while basically promising those with much and in power that there doomed. Because no good person has ever had power over others, only bad people (sarcasm).
There is some decent stuff in this book that does not revolve around slave Morality, and if your familiar with stoicism then much of this will be familiar to you.
And the narrator has a soothing voice.

Problem with sound quality

I can't seem to make out the words unless it's a really quiet environment, certainly not an audio book you can understand on the train.

Nice and easy translation and soothing voice

I enjoy this interpretation since my older children (12 and 14) can grasp the principles. I also like to do a passive meditation with this playing because of the gentle and simple translation and save the heavier stuff for a more active and in depth study and reflection. I also enjoy the narrator’s voice.

great book! must read..

I loved this. I wish I read it years ago. Basically common sense teachings about how to live life in the best way. I think it should be taught in schools. If everyone lived by this book then the world would be a better place.

Better to read than listen

Normally I much prefer audiobooks over reading books, however, this book is very short and has short sentences, therefore reading it would be much more effective.

Peaceful and Inspiring

I loved the paradoxical yet profound ideas and the narrator's calming rendition nearly perfectly suited this book.
Despite having been translated from Chinese, the poetic tone was maintained. The words are easily understood but endlessly engaging: a testament to Huston Smith's analysis "it can be read in half an hour or a lifetime." - Or in this case, listened to.
My only criticism is that whilst the narrator's voice is relaxing, it can be a little too monotonous at times. For example - at the end of the page titled "Redemption", Lao Tzu answers the question of whether "the old phrase" is "a false hope" with a powerful "No!" on its very own line yet the narration of this felt underwhelming.
Overall - very satisfying.
