Story
Ava only left her daughter in the pushchair for five minutes. The buckle was fastened, and she was sure it was safe. But when she came downstairs, the door was open and Abi was gone - she walked down the road, past the Lovegoods' house, and was never seen again. A year later, the Lovegoods throw a housewarming party, showing off the results of their renovation. Ava doesn’t want to go. She can’t bear to look down that end of the road, to see the place where Abi vanished, and she doesn’t want to spend time with people who don’t share her grief.

Story
It starts with a lie. The kind we've all told - to a former acquaintance we can't quite place but still, for some reason, feel the need to impress. The story of our life, embellished for the benefit of the happily married lawyer with the kids and the lovely home. And the next thing you know, you're having dinner at their house and accepting an invitation to join them on holiday - swept up in their perfect life, the kind you always dreamed of.... Which turns out to be less than perfect.

It’s a normal afternoon when I walk out the patio doors of our kitchen to check on Mia, my stepdaughter, who is swimming in our backyard pool. But she’s gone. My heart stops when I see the back gate is open, her pink, fluffy towel lying folded on a chair. I was just feet away. Why didn’t I hear her scream? Who took our little girl?

Story
An unforgettable story about a family with a terrible secret. When a tragedy breaks a family apart, what can bring it back together? The Birds seem to be the perfect family: mother, father, four children, a picture-book cottage in the country. But one Easter weekend, something happens - something so unexpected, so devastating, that no-one can bring themselves to talk about it. The family shatters, seemingly for good. Until, years later, they are forced to return to the house they grew up in and to confront what really broke the family apart.
Publisher's Summary
The sensational new thriller from the author of the Richard & Judy best seller Lie With Me.
He saved your son's life.
Does that mean you have to give him yours?
It starts with a holiday. A three-year-old boy on a beach, and the hero who saves his life. But nothing is ever that simple.
Tessa and Marcus know they owe Dave Jepsom more than they can ever repay.Yet even as he is walking from the sea with their son in his arms, there is something about him that makes them uneasy. He is not like other people that they know. Being with him makes them confront truths about themselves they would rather not see. The shock of that moment will change everything. And it's not how things start that matter.
But how they end....

Just too long!
This starts off wonderfully - rather like a Patricia HIghsmith. However, as the hours drag on, I realise the scene is "being set" - but for what? The print version is 352 pages, about 100 pages too long. You lose all interes t in these Sloanies/yuppies and their various misdeeds and problems.....I have not actually finished this. I will probably stagger on to the end - but without much interest. Excellent performances by the readers.

What on earth?
I was so pleased with another of this authors books that I was itching to listen to this one. I waited for hours for it to get going and after what seemed like days of waiting, the announcement “We hope you have enjoyed this audible presentation” shocked me as I thought it must be a mistake. It was a real “is that it?” moment. Total lack of imagination on the authors part and rather lazy writing. The narrators whilst they had nice voices, read the book in a depressed and dreary tone which often meant I switched off and had to rewind it several times. This is a first for me. I’m so disappointed I will be returning this book. Sorry Sabine but this is not up to your usual standard. Love the others you’ve done but this was really quite awful and a rather pointless book.

Gripping, unusual and superbly narrated
I cannot fault this latest offering from Sabine Durrant. I have enjoyed all her books so far, but this the best yet. The characters are all very real and very cleverly observed, and the chain of events, spiralling towards the end, one mistake or mischance following another, have a horrible inevitability about them. Despite that, this book keeps you guessing, and the ending is a real shock. The narration, from both male and female readers, is perfect.

Take Me In
Once again Sabine Durrant sets her latest psychological thriller in the moneyed streets of gentrified Wandsworth, so expect loads of premium name dropping and 'kitchen suppers'. I did find the central characters, Marcus and Tessa, who met when they both worked for the same PR company, insufferably smug if I'm honest, making it difficult to have any sympathy for their plight. I think that the plot, which switched between the first person narrative of the couple to be a bit convoluted at times and there were a few stands which I expected to play an important role in the story, but they did not. The narrators, Rory Kinnear and Morven Christie both did a sterling job, trying to inject some life into the somewhat staccato text. That said, Kinnear did whisper some of the female parts in a very odd manner. The ending was far too abrupt considering how long it took the reader to get there.

Awful ending
Enjoyed the story in the most part but it wss as if the author had to finish up quickly so just rattled out any old ending, without drawing the strands of the story together. No idea why we heard of certain things as we never discovered what happened. Vert, very disappointing 😑

Rushed ending spoils a good listen.
Loved Durrant's previous book, Lie With Me, but this book has the same themes, and props, Jo Malone, Dyptique candles, Flat whites, SW London. The narration is good but the ending is predictable and any twists are not fully explained.

A cleverly thought out novel with believable characters though Tess was a bit annoying and I felt sorry for Josh. Ideas about class and snobbery were toecurlingly good. I didn't want it to end.

Loved it! It was full of twists and turns and really well preformed. I couldn't stop listening to it. However I felt the end needed another chapter to close it. As I'm left wondering about the characters. Morven Christie was perfect in this role. I always find her accent is amazing as she is Scottish.
