Publisher's Summary

Only a few short months after humanity's first interstellar flights, the first shots have been fired in what will eventually become known as the Alliance Wars.

Terran Fleet Command teeters on the edge of chaos in the aftermath of Chairwoman Crull's removal from power, while in space, Earth's defense falls squarely on the shoulders of Admiral Kevin Patterson. With only a small number of ships capable of bringing the fight to the enemy, he makes the bold decision to divide his forces, meeting the Resistance task force head-on at two separate locations.

Captain Tom Prescott and crew aboard the destroyer Theseus meet with initial success on the battlefield, only to be faced with the arrival of a warship completely out of her class - armed with weapons for which she is not prepared.

As the Resistance task force makes its final approach to Earth, a new ally warns of the horrors that will be visited on our homeworld if the coming attack succeeds. In the meantime, the enigmatic Guardian watches and waits, noncommittal as to its role as a protector or a mere observer.

Yet hope remains - as a friend of humanity finally comes to grips with his destiny.

An enjoyable and interesting sci-fi

I'll start by saying that I'll do a full series review on the next book. This review is simply to voice a minor issue that vexed me every time I heard it in the story.
The Australian character! It took me several times hearing the narrators attempt at an apparently very northern Queensland accent to realise that it was meant to be Australian at all.
I honestly didn't pay a whole lot of attention that that particular character's backstory, as audiobooks are my workplace background noise to shorten the work hours. But I do believe there was some mention of the character, in particular, coming from Sydney? Or at the very least, I don't think they were from Northern QLD. The average Australian speaks with a much more neutral accent than this atrociously read one.
This isn't a criticism of the story and narration as a whole, it was generally well done and enjoyable, but being an Australian it grated on my nerves every time I heard that dialogue.

basically 2 battles.. not much more to story

struggled to finish it.. no real twists.. needs some intrigue or character development.. probably the last book I read in this series..
