Story
They called him Bane the Bastard - though none said it to his face. Born of treachery, his name a curse, he grew up among the warriors of the Rigante. They valued his skills in war, but they feared the violence in his heart. And when, as a Wolfshead and Outlaw, he left Rigante lands, they breathed sighs of relief. But Bane would return, the destiny of the Rigante in his hands, the fate of the world resting on his skills with a blade.

surprise!
I have been a David Gemmell fan since I read Legend as a first run hardcover. I lost the ability to read in 1994 after brain surjury and tried audio books for 25 years, then I was given Knights of Dark Reknown on Audio disc. 4 books later a a friend found Audible for me & I lost myself in the Drenai. The first time I tried to listen to David Gemmell Sword in the Storm I quit because how could a woman do justice to a Gemmell story - I ask forgiveness for my prejudice, I WAS WRONG. This needed an excellent Narrator & Adjoa is, Siebenesc. Thank you.

An all-time favourite I could barely get through
Beautiful narration but I found the voices almost unbearable. I could honestly listen to the narrator all day, her voice is beautiful, and some of her intense scenes were deeply emotive but, my god, the dialogue was bad. This is my favourite book and I struggled to finish it. Riamfada's voice in particular was appalling, nevermind the strange translyvanian tones of the men of Stone. I feel so rude writing this and maybe I'm out of line and perhaps my opinion is skewed by my love of the book but I won't be downloading the rest.
I mean, I probably will.
Ah damn, of course I will.
To sum up: amazing story, beautiful narration, terrible voices.

Massive let down.
I've read this book 3 times, and will read 100 more times before I die.
The massive let down for me was the ridiculous accents used by the reader. Like, did she read the book first to gain an understanding of its meaning or the story line or who she was reading about? It's quite obvious that the keltoi people are intended to be celtic. And the people of stone I can only assume we're intended to be Greek, as the mention of the short stabbing swords and large rectangular sheilds implies Greek or Mediterranean warriors. What's with the weird french/Transylvanian accent. It was unbearably bad and I kept finding my self hating it and praying for an end to the accents... Killed it for me. Her voice was beautiful, her story telling amazing, but the accents made me hate every second of this audio book.

West Country Accent? WTF?
The woman who narrates the story seemed to have mastered the West Country accent marvellously but its story, slang and general context is meant for a Celtic setting, and should use Scottish or Irish accents. Whoever told her to interpret the story as West Country needs shooting, it’s sounds really bad and undermines the direction of a fantastic story. David Gemmell is by far my favourite author and I’m from the West Country and the use of this accent is appalling for this story, I’ll be horrified if they’ve allowed her to do it all the way through the Rigante series! Oh GOD I hope not!

Too many reviews bashing the narrator
Always been a big fan of Gemmel and was excited to see the Rigante series on Audible. However, I very nearly did not get this book because of the reviews of the narrator, which would have been too bad.
Admittedly, it took me a bit to get used to hearing a woman narrator of the many male characters, mostly because I am all too used to listening to men narrating books. I also realized that I have never had a problem with the numerous men narrators voicing female characters, often very badly, in so many books (what does that say about me, right!). I have to say that this narrator was far better at men's voices than most male narrators of women's voices.
After about the first 30 minutes, I fell into her narration, she did a great job, mixing voices and accents quite well and I easily got lost into the rhythm of her narration and felt the book to be better for her skill.
I am glad that I got this book and will look forward to Adjoa Andoh's narration over the series.

My favorite series but disappointed in narrator
I feel they should have used a better narrator. This lady made Banuin sound like the count from Sesame Street.
Now that I have gotten through most of the book, the narrator really ruined the accents in this story for me. I always had in my head Scottish and English accents. I don't know why she made the stone people sound like they're from Transylvania

I'm a woman who loves sci-fi and fantasy. I also love how this series is narrated I a strong storytelling woman. It's so rare to get a woman narrator in this genre. It should be applauded. I've Loved David Gemmell for as long as I can remember. I also love all his audio books. It's nice to have a variety of narrators when it comes to different sagas.

Female narrator?!?
The Regante series is amazing! Possibly David Gemmells best. However, you have to question the judgment of using a female voice actor to read a book with primarily male characters. Adjoa Andoh has a nice voice and tells the story portion well. She simply shouldn't have been cast for this story. The Dialog between male characters is terrible! Someone with a very nice feminine voice just can't mimic gruff male warriors. She struggles to add so much base that the words come out choppy and all emotion is lost from her delivery. I ended up finishing the book because I love the story. I found it helps to think of the dialog as being so bad that it is funny.

Great story, abysmal narration
Where does Sword in the Storm rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Little needs to be added to the comments concerning the story by the late great David Gemmell. I personally love it very much and was thrilled to be able to own the audiobooks of all his stories.
How could the performance have been better?
The above being said, I cannot for the life of me imagine who would have come up with the idea of having a female narration to this cycle of stories about the Rigante as being necessary or at least adding anything positive to the experience. Adjoa Andoh is by no means a bad narrator, but she is certainly the wrong narrator. Not only is the main character a guy named Sword in the Storm but the book is also a fantasy novel aimed at men. Yet, as I could eventually warm to her narration, there is one thing she cannot deliver: her pronunciation of the Rigante names and places and whatnot is to my ears jarring, cringeworthy and just plain wrong. These names need to be spoken with a gruffness and, you know, pronounced properly. Intonation and tempo is in any language an integral part what makes it so beautiful. Here, the names are just fluffy where they should be loaded with strength and portent. Has anyone involved in the production bothered to take a listen to the last book called Stormrider as narrated by Christopher Kay? There we have many of the names popping up again from the earlier books and he's spot on.

Good story, good narrator, BUT...
I love Gemmel’s stories, even the not so good ones are still enjoyable. And this story is no different. I like it a lot.
And the narrator is a good narrator, BUT I don’t think she quite fits this genre, or maybe just not this book. She is good at enunciation, and pacing, and enthusiasm, but her accents are a little overdone and they don’t really fit this setting. Thick, half Russian, half Arabic accents with breathy rrrrrrrrolling “R”s, German accents that sound like they belong in a cheesy spy movie... just made it hard to listen to.
So, story? Great. Classic Gemmel. Narration? Good if you can get past the accents.

Great story. Narration is somewhat discordant.
Have been looking forward to the release of the Rigante series for a while. I've always loved the books and was hoping it would be read by the same narrator as the Drenai series.
Sadly, the narrator is awful and seems to pick the worst accents possible. I don't really understand the choice of a female narrator either, most of the characters are men. It's a fairly male centric storyline. Its all a bit strange.
Dissapointed.

Great story......wrong narrator
I have loved this story and its sequels for years. but why choose a woman to narrate when the majority of the lead characters are male and based upon Celtic clans. Her narration of events is smooth, easy on the ear and emotive. The voices she gives to the characters are just jar on the senses, are odd and and at times hard to follow.
This feels like an unnecessary combination of artistic freedom and PC resulting in a a good story spoilt
A shame really as I will not now buy the sequels.

Only ever going to give a DG novel 5 stars BUT a
A female narrator for a book of 99% male characters - absolute brain dead idea - most of the time she sounds like a member of ello ello or the female version of Hinge & Bracket. 11 chapters in and my irritation is still running strong.

Excellent!
Any additional comments?
I am a die hard Gemmell fan and read each and every one as they were released throughout the 80's, 90's and 00's. Having finished the audiobook Drenai saga, and being very comfortable with Sean Barrett's voice, I was sceptical about a female narrating the Rigante stories but hats off to Adjoa Andoh. Marvellous job, in my opinion. Her voice is very easy to listen to and, although her accents are based more in Bristol than the highlands, I soon found her storytelling very engaging. By the time I had finished the Rigante series I'd put her on par with Sean Barratt and above Christian Rodska whose accents in the Shannow trilogy were all over the shop in my opinion.Superb, I will re listen at some point.

Great Story, Not Sure About The Voices....
David Gemmell is one of my favourite authors and the story does not disappoint. The narrators voice is fine, but the choice of accents for the main characters seems an odd one. It appears to make them sound slow witted or addled most of the time, it is read in a very halting manner as if the narrator is having to concentrate very hard, I can only liken them to stereotypical bumpkin accents. Sadly the performance does not work for me, I don't think I'll be listening to the rest of the series, which is a shame because I loved these books.

Good story - wrong reader
I just couldn’t get into this story. The reader wasn’t the right fit for it. I lost interest.
I had however, also got the Kindle version and one day decided to give it a try. It’s a brilliant story and I really enjoyed that version. I would never have thought the reader could make that much difference.

Disappointed by the Southern Narration.
Having ready this book and the rigante series many years ago I looked forward to relaxing and listening to it via Audible. However I was truly disappointed when I heard the Narration. I do not have issues with Adjoa in that a female is reading this, not how I would expected this to be, but nevertheless fine by me. Where I do have an issue is in the portrayal of Con, who to all intents and purposes is from the North and the most likely a Scot or even north of England. To portrait him however with a south West accent flung me from the start and to be honest I never really recovered throughout the entire book. The character became a bit unreal to me. I always envisaged Con to be a strong and quite a commanding personality, well not to me with that accent. Sorry folks, disappointed to the point where I am uncertain if I want to hear about Bane if his voice /accent are along the same lines. Can certainly live with a southern accent for the Drenai novels but surely a book with quotes Highlands, Highland cattle and the 'pipes' must surely be based in the North. We all know who David was eluding to in the tribes and people's in this book.
