Publisher's Summary

In a world full of super powers, Felix had a pretty crappy one.

After learning to harness his ability to modify any item he owns, he now runs a corporation that is rapidly expanding - Legion. After tangling with the local Heroes guild they’ve finally settled into a semblance of stability.

Sounds great on paper. Run your company, make money, be your own boss, settle down. Except that with running a business, comes an inordinate amount of responsibilities. Like making sure everything keeps running and your people are paid.

Worrying about the longevity of his company, Felix begins to expand into other cities. So they’ve packed up the car, put in all the requisite forms, gotten the approvals, and set out to start Legion up in a new city.

The problem, though, is the local government had no idea who they were selling permits to. Approving forms for. To Felix and Legion.

And now they’re about to find out.

The end kinda ruins the start, maybe...

It started small but the new direction is a bit strange, the end ruined it for me.

Juvenile

Juvenile sory line, no consistent direction, mimimal attention to detail, characters a mere veneer. Hoped it would be better than the first but much worse.

Just as good as the first

This series is great. I don't usually like when they switch narrators but they have done a really good job. The story just pulls you along and takes a few turns that I didn't expect. I will be re listening to this book often.

Good follow up

was a good follow up. interesting turn of events. But really miss the sound effects the previous reader used. like when it was a thought, not spoken.

Got better

I liked the first book, hit on lit rpg, hinted at harem, but concentrated on building characters, and scraping out a safe place. I liked how doing those things wasn't always pretty and how that introduced character conflicts.

The second book builds on that, as supporting characters have undiscovered conflict, and the world building / physics (magic) architecture is still being revealed. The second book took the franchise from what I thought was a male sexual fantasy into something that could transition into an epic fantasy. I'd like to see it be a blend of the two, and we will see it he can do that in the next book.

Jeff Hayes narrated the first book and Nick Podehl narrated the second. I honestly think and feel both are very talented narrators. I think Jeff burrows into Felix deeper, but I think Nick has a more broad cast of characters.

I'm rather divided on the narrator decision, as it's a production issue and had little to do with content creation; it is about the media the content is presented in, and this (audible) is a translation of the original.

My ideal would be Jeff as Felix, and Nick as everyone else. They are both good at what they do, and I enjoyed each of their performances.

Looking forward to Arand's next work.

Legion First!!!! Felix is back and so is Skipper

Legion First!!! That is the motto Felix's people live, die, and get ressurrected by, and it is the way that you need to think of this book series. Get it before all others. This is a fantastasically fun romp into a melding of gamelit and superheroes that is over far too fast, and is filled with funny lines, a harem of beauties, bad grass mo-fo villains, and a gubernatorial run.

This book does not take you where you expect it to go. When we first started out I really thought the whole thing would be about Felix running for governor and consolidating his forces in the new city. It's not. There is so much more to it. That's the thing with Arand, he shows you a roadmap, then promptly takes an indelible marker and makes his own roads into areas and territories you would not expect. He's pretty slick, and he continually pulls the rug out from under you. Then you find there is no floor beneath the rug. Additionally, the space below you ins't empty as it actually leads into a magma pit filled with fireproof alligators and Piranha. He then hands you an umbrella to slow your descent, and some aloe to sooth your burns. You just have to live with the bites.

Seriously, this could have been a major let down on so many levels. First, the original book in the series was simply brilliant in concept and creation. The characters, and I do mean all of them, suck you in. You love all of them, each for a different reason. Third, the first book made it so that this book had to really go freaking big or blow up. There wasn't going to be a middle ground. This book most certainly comes up to the level of being his The Empire Strikes Back book. I really hope he can avoid a Return of the Jedi in book three. Felix just continues to impress, and his solutions are pretty ingenious. I love his "fixers". Each of the other characters evolve in their own way; Kit, Andrea, Felicia, Lilly, and the rest all have their own subplots/development that fits. With a cast as large as this that is hard to do.

Another area that could have tanked this audible version is that, for whatever reason, Jeff Hays did not return as the narrator. Now, I have repeatedly stated, and will continue to do so, that Jeff is far and away my favorite narrator. He cannot be touched, and this is his genre! I was crushed when I found out that he wasn't returning for the rest of the series, and I worried that it might be a blow that SSOSH wouldn't be able to recover from. Now, if you expect me to say that Nick came in and did a better job, forget it. Hays is the MAN. HOWEVER, I will concede that if it had to be anyone, then Pohdel was the cat to take care of business. He really does his best to emulate the voices that Jeff put forth, and I think he comes closest with Andrea, but his pancakes will never be Jeff's pancakes. The rest of the voices are all great jobs, although I did have some difficulty knowing if it was Kit or Lilly talking, but I believe that is only because I have listened to jeff's version so many times that their voices are ingrained in my head.

I love that the cover shows off one of the gals from Felix's crew, but I hope that the third book will show them all, including Felix, as I know that Arand is fond of trilogies, and the next book will be then of our favorite anti-hero. The artwork is just phenomenal, and I would happily allow it to grace my phone as background or hang on my wall as a poster. Seriously, why don't authors branch out and sell some merch? Fans are fans and they will always want MORE. Do you hear me, Mr. Arand? I hopes so.

I hope that you, the person reading this review sees that I feel that this is one of the best series on the market, not matter what genre you look at. I believe that there is no way that you could not enjoy this book unless you completely lack imagination or a soul. Yes, it does deal with some dark stuff, like slavery (but not in the way you are thinking) and brains are as likely to blow by as a tumbleweed in a western or a newspaper in a postapocalyptic world, but this is an adeventure. This is a lamborghini strapped to a rollercoaster rail ride of a lifetime. Don't miss out. Join Legion now!! Remember, Legion first!!!!!! Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

amazing work can't wait for book 3

I loved it all. the fact the voice actor changed didn't change the tempo of the book because he put work into recreating the voices of the characters and did them in my opinion just write and I also love the story for meyu (idk how to spell her name) but it definitely threw me for a loop

Captivating

After having listened to book one, I was disappointed there wasn't a second book for me to get. After a bit, I was notified that the second book was put on pre sale. Bet. I purchased it and waited. I was so excited, I started to remember what day it was by how many days I had left. Arand did not let me down. This series is amazing and brings on a while new take to the fantasy world. The characters are fascinating and Podehl does an outstanding performance in bringing life to the story. Keep up the good work, I look forward to the next book.

a improvement on an already good story

this book took the story from a fun super power harem book to an actual serious and engrossing story. the writer did a great job coming up with new ideas and characters, I really felt much more attached to the series after this book then I did after the first. I love the nod to the wild wastes series that is in the book as well. I was a bit disappointed that Jeff Hays was no longer the narrator even though the current narrator has been another of my favorites, though my disappointment stemmed more from a switch of voice after getting used to them in book one rather than any lack of skill on the narrators part. he did a great job at keeping as close to the voices for each character as a different person can. over all the book was a massive improvement in a already entertaining series.

What happened to the other narrator?

Don't get me wrong I love Nick Podel as a narrator but I really enjoyed what Jeff Hayes did for the last book. His voice pretty much set the tone for how the MC felt about everything and it was a perfect fit. Apathetic but willing. Then reluctant to willing. And finally to a full fledged Guardian.
Nick Podel still did a great job. :)

great Follow up to the first

This second book is a great follow up to the first one good development of the different characters and just and overall good story.
The previous Narrtor was unable to read this book because of other commitments. Although
the narratetor maybe diffrent Nick Podehl dose a great job like he always dose on making everyone unique and you can tell who is who.

I am looking foward to the next book in this series and I am thankful that it is Nick Podehl has signed on to read.

Disjointed

In my opinion changing the narrator for the second book hasn't worked at all, despite the ability of the new narrator having two different people read the same story changes it entirely because of their individual reading style. It just doesn't work whatsoever unfortunately and I got a refund.
Good book just a very poor decision made for who knows what reason. Personally I would of waited for Jeff Hays..

what did I just listen to?

the story jumps around far too much. shame since the first one was very focussed. it's like the author had too many ideas and put them all into one book rather than spread them out and make each point a full story instead of 1 chapter each. it became very strange to follow at the end and, in my opinion, large parts of the story made no sense at all. dissapointing second book.

Not as engaging as the first book, but good filler for the overarching story arch. But it does seem that as the story expands some character development is being left at the wayside.

Good follow up

I've read a few comments that were negative based on the change of narrator. At first I was also thrown a little by the difference, as the first book set the 'feel' for the characters and the voices were so well established by the end that it was a tough act to follow. However, since they had no choice, I think Nick Podehl was a great choice and he managed to capture and even get very close to the voices of the key characters and I actually think this is a positive rather than a negative, as any other voice actor would probably have struggled to get the voices and style down so closely. After the first chapter or so I was back into the story and had forgotten about the change in narrator and I've given the performance 5 stars as this wasn't an easy task but he managed it brilliantly. As for the story, it wasn't compelling as the first, but it continues the theme and development of Legion nicely and has some new characters that will be interesting to see explained in the next book, which will hopefully tie up all the reasons for the powers etc (trying not to give spoilers away).
Overall I thought this was an enjoyable follow up. Not quite as good as the first, but certainly an enjoyable book and looking forward to seeing where he goes with this.
