About this listen

The phenomenal fifth book in the Hunger Games series!

Acclaimed actor Jefferson White, who starred in Paramount Network's Yellowstone as Jimmy Hurdstrom, brings his talent to the worldwide best-selling Hunger Games series as narrator of the Sunrise on the Reaping audiobook!

When you've been set up

to lose everything you love,

what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

Editorial Review

Cinna told me to listen to this
In 2012, my boyfriend (now husband) bought me a shirt that said Cinna told me to wear this, and I think that should tell you everything you need to know about my devotion to The Hunger Games franchise. The latest addition to the series, Sunrise on the Reaping, is something I didn’t even know I could hope for: Haymitch’s origin story. And my already high levels of anticipation for the release reached a fever-pitch when Jefferson White ( Yellowstone) was announced as the narrator, and we got to hear a sneak peek of his performance. We first met Haymitch as Katniss and Peeta’s mentor in Book 1, and since then all we could do was speculate about his own journey in the Hunger Games some 24 years before. In Sunrise on the Reaping we’ll get to meet a 16-year-old Haymitch (and perhaps the teenage versions of Katniss’s parents, Effie, and Cinna ... one can dream), and finally learn how the tenacious teen became the hardened man we all have a soft spot for. May the odds be ever in his favour. —Katie O., Audible Editor

The symbolism, the care, the pain, the brutal intent and obvious vicious beauty. This book needed to exist, not just for the hungergames universe but for society. as a reminder.

Haymitch will forever be my favourite character

The narration just fits perfectly, especially the dramatic parts and emphasis. What an incredible book, cry-worthy for sure.

The voice actor.

Amazing ending to the series . I have loved all the hunger games and this one made me cry also at the end.

I’m not much of a reader. This is literally my first book. The first two chapters had these small cringe moments but after that it was hit after hit. It had me feeling things I didn’t think a book could get me to feel. Great read.

… DAMN

he was the right mockingjay at the wrong time. I hope he will rest easy knowing that he was a catalyst in katniss' revolution

Better than the prior output “A Ballad…” and more exciting. However the ending was dreary and bland. There was far too much filler with poetry. This functions more like filling in the gaps about information we already have from the original trilogy, rather than adding anything significantly new.

Mostly enjoyable

While I already enjoyed the character of Haymitch hearing his back story, added clarity to him. It really was a sad story that explains why he became the person that he was during Katniss and Peeta's timeline.
A great prequel to the Hunger Games series introducing in more detail characters that we've already meet, Effie thankfully remains someone I loved also.

I will also add that it took a little for the narrator to grow on me, not awful but his tone annoyed me.

Well Written Prequel

This is a great book. It has the excitement and heart of the original HG book. Really great story with heaps of emotion and excitement. Really enjoyed it

Great prequel

I loved it so much it was upsetting yet heartwarming. I love seeing Haymitch’s side of the story and the great epilogue really set the scene from the last book; The Mockingjay. Also, I really want to know how President Snow became evil even though we had the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Overall, an epic book!

The best book! (Must read!)
