Publisher's Summary

What do you do when you find yourself suddenly single? Go suddenly suicidal? Suddenly sexcrazed? Or simply slump into self-pity? Alix Callaghan, who thought she was in control of her busy life, feels like doing all three when her long-term boyfriend insists on settling down to a sensible existence – complete with children, proper meals and early nights – but without her. Little by little, though, Alix begins to think there might be more to the single life than the first shock of rejection suggests...

Bit boring

It’s not that bad a listen, thou I found it a bit boring and repetitive, in the end I jumped a few chapters and didn’t feel I’d missed anything

Not one of the authors best

Not a very likable character. I found it hard to empathize with her. and found her very shallow.

Her books always a good read.

Would you consider the audio edition of Suddenly Single to be better than the print version?

I always listen to books, seldom read them. I love Sheila O'Flanagan books and will always listen to them.

What other book might you compare Suddenly Single to and why?

Can't think of one to compare it to, it's a story of it's one. I enjoyed it.

Have you listened to any of Caroline Lennon’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I love Caroline Lennon narrations. She is good at voices and accents, brings her characters to life.

If you could take any character from Suddenly Single out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Alex of course, very interesting person.

I did enjoy it in the end

If you’ve listened to books by Sheila O'Flanagan before, how does this one compare?

I have listened to several books by this author and found to be 5* listens/reads. The meat of this one was also very good, but I agree with another reviewer that there was too much detail of the stock market and trading room. I had to skip a few chapters alltogether after the first couple, because (from the several bits of each one of those chapters that I checked) they seemed to consist almost entirely of shouting in the dealing room. This level of detail was unnecessary for the story. That said, when I got past about chapter 17, the dealing room stuff was at an appropriate level for context.

What does Caroline Lennon bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She is my favourite narrator and was faultless as usual.

Any additional comments?

If not for the high quality of the writing and my previous enjoyment of this authors work, I may have given-up and obtained a refund after the first half a dozen chapters. I am glad that I persevered though.

Enjoyable

Nice story, with a steady pace and a narrative that will keep you listening and wanting more. Recommended, particularly for aspiring career minded women.

Not as expected

What did you like best about Suddenly Single? What did you like least?

I like books which have depth of story but this book delved way too much into the detaill of financial markets and currency dealing for my liking.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

It was predictable but okay.

Which character – as performed by Caroline Lennon – was your favourite?

I didn't have a favourite character.

Was Suddenly Single worth the listening time?

Not as good as other books by the same author.

Any additional comments?

From the publisher's description I expected something more light hearted but a large part of this book was about the misery of breakup and rejection.

Overly detailed and now very dated

Whilst I appreciate research, there was far too much detail in this book. You could have edited out half of the trading room detail and still had enough insight.
The most astonishing thing about this book is how dated it is already. I know that workplace attitudes rapidly evolve, and that the UK is slightly ahead of Dublin, but the shocking references to career decisions and biological clocks as well as no end of sexist stereotyping had me cringing on many occasions and glad to know that things have changed (in my world at least).
Due to the depth of content the actual story got a little lost, which was a shame as it was actually quite good.

Give this one a miss!

This is the second Sheila O'Flanagan I've listened to, and it will certainly be the last! Alix, the central character, is one of least sympathetic characters I've ever come across. She is selfish and tiresome in the extreme. The storyline of several romantic interests is unbelievable, given how unpleasant a character she is. Also, the narrator also has an unfortunate sarcastic tone of voice.

Dull

The storyline was pretty boring and nothing exciting happened. The narrator was good but story lacked any zing or substance. Sorry

Another Great Story

Really easy listening. Great characters. Believable story. Another triumph for S.O I bought this in the £3 sale but it's also worth a precious credit!

Alex needs to run away from her toxic family!

I thought I quite like Sheila O'Flanagan for a bit of light-hearted chic lit, but I think I'm done. Very repetitive both within the book, and between different titles. In this book, I was getting infuriated with Alex's family and the way in which they just couldn't accept her, always interfering to the point of bullying. I was happy it ended the way it did and I think she had a very lucky escape! Also, Caroline Lennon has a very staccato way of speaking that I don't find easy to listen to.

Enjoyable background read

This had a nice consistent plot, only once did I think “that makes no sense”, but at times I felt too drawn into the finance/work world when that’s what I was trying to escape from! Funny and light all the same.

Stagnant storyline

I’ve read two other books by this author, and I’ve loved them, however, this one is incredibly boring and the story remains stagnant throughout. I kept trying, thinking it would improve but even 3/4 of the way through it was no better. I didn’t bother listening to the end!
