Publisher's Summary

Sometimes, we fall in love on mission trips even though we know we’ll break up when we get back. Sometimes, you have to shot-block a friend’s prayer because she’s asking God to bless an obviously bad dating relationship. Sometimes, you think, “I wish I had a T-shirt that said ‘I direct deposit my tithe’ so people wouldn’t judge me.” Sometimes, the stuff that comes with faith is funny. This is that stuff.

Jonathan Acuff’s Stuff Christians Like is your field guide to all things Christian. You’ll learn the culinary magic of the crock-pot. Think you’ve got a Metro worship leader? Use Acuff’s checklist. Want to avoid a prayer handholding faux pas? Acuff has you covered. Like a satirical grenade, Acuff brings us the humor and honesty that galvanized more than a million online readers from more than 200 countries in a new portable version. Welcome to the funny side of faith.

Belly laughs and tears

Whilst it was not always culturally relevant to me as an Australian Baptist, I still 'got it' and I had some great laughs listening to Jonathan read his book. His on point satire and blunt truths brought me to tears a couple of times too!

I liked this stuff

It's fun to have an easy listen about aspects of the Christian life we know so well yet might not have seen the humor in before now. This isn't a serious theological treatise, it is fun and funny and somewhat irreverent about the things people of faith do in church and in their everyday lives. The style of humor is ironic so don't fall into the trap of taking the essays on face value or at all too seriously. It's especially nice to have someone prove that Christians do hav a sense of humor and that we even laugh about ourselves--though not the faith.

One bonus of this audio book is that Jonathan Acuff adds in a few tidbits that were a function of his experience recording the book so that it feels even more immediate for the listener.

We laughed, we cried then we prayed

This is a funny book, particularly if you're Protestant. My husband (the Presbyterian) and I (the Catholic, former Baptist) listened to this audiobook while driving around for weekend errands. We laughed and stopped the book to make discuss the truth in the humor. Yet, near the end, on a part about ice cream and mustard (I can't explain without spoiling it), I was deeply touched and cried, we pulled over, and prayed. We've been recommending the book to many of our friends and drawing examples from it.
There are a lot of inside the culture jokes, if your culture includes prayer groups and mega-churches. My fellow Catholics and traditional Anglo-Catholic friends may find it half as funny, but still funny.

Incredibly Funny and Clean!

If you could sum up Stuff Christians Like in three words, what would they be?

Hilarious, Clean, Fantastic

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed so hard that I had to try to contain myself because I was listening to this at work. Listening to this book makes the time fly by.

Any additional comments?

I had trouble with the download of this book. It would get stuck in certain places and I would have to restart my i-pod. This is in no way a reflection of the book itself....this had to do with Audible I am sure, and all my other books from them have worked just fine.

Sarcasm with a theological point. Delightful.

I usually can't stand sarcasm......

And yet, this was a delightful book. It is not mocking Christianity. Rather, it makes theological points in a humorous way, pointing out the inconsistencies we are sometimes guilty of. Some of the points are pretty profound..

I usually don't think it is a good idea for authors to narrate their own works (usually a recipe for disaster)..but this time it works.

Religion is too important to take too seriously

If we don't learn to laugh at ourselves we aren't going to be able to laugh with other people. I like that as the the premise of this book of essays and think for the most part, he does a great job. Please don't expect heavy, please don't look for side-aching humor, think fun with a bit of funky and youthful confessions. My best advise is if you think Kanye West is a direction and you think Jay-Z are letters in the alphabet, keep going, but if you see the word Psalms and your first thought is what kind of tree is that - - - jump on in, the holy water is fine.

Almost Totally Funny

My 14 year old daughter and I turned this on to listen to on a long trip. We had to cut quickly to the 2nd chapter because the opening story was about sex and honeymoons. Thanks, Jonathan. Most of the rest was hilariously true. Oh, and there is another instance somewhere later that launches into a similar topic.
