Publisher's Summary

Inspector Rebus Book 4

Gregor Jack, MP, well-liked, young, married to the fiery Elizabeth - to the outside world a very public success story. But Jack's carefully nurtured career plans take a tumble after a 'mistake' during a police raid on a notorious Edinburgh brothel. Then Elizabeth disappears, a couple of bodies float into view where they shouldn't, and a lunatic speaks from his asylum...

Initially Rebus is sympathetic to the MP's dilemma - who hasn't occasionally succumbed to temptation? - but with the disappearance of Jack's wife the glamour surrounding the popular young man begins to tarnish. Someone wants to strip Jack naked and Rebus wants to know why...

Rebus, unlikable protagonist is funny, smart and addictive. His character and methods are constantly appealing.

Love the story, but could not get to the end.

I usually like Ian Rankin very much, he is on of my 5 preferred authors. Yet I could not get to the end this time.
I do not want anyone to think this is a critic of the book, not at all.
But I am from Denmark, so English is a second language to me. This gave me a lot of problems because of this audiobooks narration. It is, from my point of view read in heavily dialected English, and that broke my back.
I think this book should be narrated by another, someone with a more neutral English.

Not one of Rankin's best

As ever I seem to be in the minority with my opinion of this book. My imagination really wasn't captured by this story, the writing was OK and I love James MacPherson's voice, he narrates very well and is 'up there' among my favourites.
I just got a bit bored by the tale, the characters were all immoral, dishonest, or unbelievable and I had little interest in their lives.

Great Story

Liked the story line with the twists and Rebus's own instincts often taking him down the wrong track.

Hmmm...great narrator, not so great storyline

I love James McPhersons narration, in what would otherwise have been a slightly soporific storyline, he held my interest. This is the fourth of the Rebus books I’ve listened to, and the dullest, which is a real shame. Still, it won’t put me off. Onto book number five I go!!

Great story, terrific narrator.

I’ve struggled with novels on audible. I don’t want them to be turned into plays; I want them to feel like the author is telling the story, not the narrator is creating their own story. This was a great Rebus story, and the narrator made it feel like Ian Rankin was telling the story, just the way I would read it. Perfect!

five star rankin

Having read all the rebus books I thought I'd try them on audible, boy I'm glad I have. This is my third one and the best revisit so far.James MacPherson is just perfect as a narrator. This is one of the earlier rebus novels and what stands out on audible is how much dry humour their is in the book that I don't recall when reading it,I don't know if this is just down to the narration but it came as a pleasant surprise. It just goes to show how good an author Rankin is and what a brilliant creation rebus is

His writing improved.

It is always interesting to experience " earlier works" from a writer whom you have come to appreciate.
There is no doubt that the plots were always interesting ( for this genre) but Mr R, thankfully, looked to improving the pace and urgency in his style.
How much less violent these early novels were and how less broken as a human being Rebus was. Life, even in the context of a novel series, becomes / became more brutal and gritty for many.
