About this listen

A young warrior discovers her true potential as a cybernetic samurai battling conspiracies and aliens in this original, action-packed cyberpunk series.

There’s always a need for heroes in the city of New Montreal. So when a young girl is kidnapped by business-backed mercenaries, Catherine “Cat” LeBlanc—who’s been a cyber-samurai for little more than a day—teams up with pyrotechnic nun-samurai Gomorrah to determine why a corporation would target a child . . . and what exactly they did to her.

Having only recently ascended from your average nobody to what many would consider the pinnacle of humanity, the inexperienced Cat is overwhelmed, to say the least. She’s worried about how her girlfriend, Lucy, will react to the changes, and wonders whether she can use her newfound power and growing influence to care for her “kittens,” a group of orphans in her charge.

Meanwhile, as if black-ops assassins and their corporate masters weren’t dangerous enough, the alien Antithesis have infiltrated the mining town of Black Bear. Capable of mimicking inanimate objects, the aliens could be anywhere—and anything. Rooting out and combatting these shapeshifting aliens would be a chore for even the most seasoned samurai. For Cat, it will test the very limits of both her fighting skills and her ability to save lives.

Second book in the series and I rather enjoyed it, the smut between two almost 18 year olds was a bit iffy, but the overall story kept me wanting more.

Not as good as the first, but the character’s and world were cool.

The book starts with a very long, drawn out and ultimately pointless side quest for ~30 chapters with some slice-of-life bits thrown in. If Cat's character developed in any meaningful way it might have been worth it, but she is a wilfully ignorant fool with little interest in improving herself. It was okay in the first book since she was a dreadfully unfortunate orphan in an extremely bad situation, but she is just squandering the amazing opportunity that's fallen into her lap.
The redemption is the return to alien purifying in the later half of the book.

Long drawn out slice-of-life eventually delivers on xenocide

I love this series so far and wish I could rate this one higher. unfortunately included in this audio is a character that exists just to have her ASD "cured". There was no build up to it, there was no discussion with the character to gain her informed consent and there was no follow-up with that character afterwards. I put myself in the position of this character and think about how I would feel. I wouldn't want to be "cured" because there is nothing wrong with me. I would resent someone that did that to me.

As someone with ASD I find this incredibly harmful and it's greatly lowered my trust in the author. I am willing to give the next book a try though. I hope that the incident it addresses with more care and not just mitigation with damage control.

Something that was quite jarring going from book one to two right away is the difference in how the characters sound despite being voiced by the some people. but I eventually got used to it.

I love the characters and the world building. it honestly reminds me a lot of Gantz but a lot less dark (at least so far).

Mostly great, but one detract and sadly it's a big one.
