Most relevant
Not my favourite book by this author. A little too sentimental, like many of Koontz’ books, and far too wordy. Really labours the point at times. Could do with a good edit. There were parts that I just couldn’t get past. I found his discussion at one point about the ‘civilising’ effect that Europeans brought to the Americas and to the Arctic quite racist and offensive. And I could not get past the character, Ginger, calling a kind old man ‘a black bastard’. After that we were supposed to believe that he just put aside his hurt and continued to help her. Furthermore, we are repeatedly encouraged to view this character as a wonderful, kind woman. I felt that he could tell me how wonderful she was to his heart’s content but he had already shown me who she was with that racist outburst. Couldn’t tie the strings of her personality into a coherent and believable whole.


Also didn’t love the narration. He had such an odd way of pronouncing certain words like ‘calm’ and ‘palm’ and it was such a distraction.

It's a story you need to concentrate on. lots of characters. But well worth it.

Dick Hill is quite possible my new favourite narrator . excellent story told exceptionally well . another Koontz classic.

A lot of build up to the mystery of why and what was going on. Ended a little flat could have been expanded at the end but overall a pretty solid read.
