Miss Read writes of an England one presumes is long gone as one reads from afar of so many things apparently going wrong. It was not without its problems - for example, one wonders why the Coggs family were not supported much earlier, and is not sentimental in the slightest. It is old fashioned comfort reading, much loved by my Granny decades ago, and sometimes just fits the bill. Excellent narration by June Barrie.
