Publisher's Summary

'The Victorians used to call their mental hospitals stone mothers,' I say. 'They thought the design of the building could literally nurse the sick back to health.'

Marianne grew up in the shadow of the old asylum, a place that still haunts her dreams. She was 17 when she fled the town, her family, her boyfriend Jesse and the body they buried.

Now, forced to return, she can feel the past closing around her. And Jesse, who never forgave her for leaving, is finally threatening to expose the truth. Marianne will do anything to protect the life she's built; the husband and daughter who must never know. Even if it means turning to her worst enemy....

But Marianne may not know the whole story - and she isn't the only one with secrets they'd kill to keep. Moving back through time to reveal twists you'll never see coming, Stone Mothers is the gripping new suspense novel from the best-selling author of He Said/She Said

Really enjoyed it!

I bought this because I'd absolutely adored Erin Kelly's 'He Said, She Said'. At first I had trouble adjusting to this being such a different style of book, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. The story is just great, and explores some interesting issues.

A bit disappointing

The story is based around former mental hospital Nazareth, which has now been turned into luxury apartments. The descriptions of the old lunatic asylum are very creepy and it’s a place you wouldn’t ever want to visit, let alone live!

The book starts quite slowly and I almost gave up. It is set in three timelines from different POV, but I was particularly affected by Helen’s story. It is horrific to think how patients were treated in such hospitals even in the 1950s, and even more horrific that they could be incarcerated there for years (or a lifetime) when they weren’t even ill in the first place.

But ultimately I found the book disappointing. The pace was too slow, and there was not enough suspense and it just felt a little flat.

slow, but picks up.

I'm glad I had to read this for the book club. The beginning starts very slowly and the "pronoun game" is a little annoying, but after about 2 hours I couldn't stop listening. The characters are well developed and the story was excellent, it's well balanced. I loved it.

Slow starter, but hang in there 👍

I nearly gave up after a few chapters as I found it very slow. However I persevered and ended up really enjoying this book as it picked up about a third of the way through and was a good read.

Slow start but worth it

Slow to start, I had moments where I was tempted to just give up, but I’m glad I persevered! Interesting book & had a twist I really didn’t expect.

Not for me

Struggled through this one. I found the moving around in timelines and viewpoints a bit disorienting. Hadnt heard an audiobook.with different narrators before, and I think that probably did work. Felt quite long, and hearing the same story from two perspectives didnt really add to the story, other than its length

Fantastic listen

Nothing is straight forward in these women's lives. Flawed characters trying to survive choices made. Some unexpected twists and turns keep you guessing until the end. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
