Publisher's Summary

Imagine how different your life would be if you knew how to develop the resilience to deal with tough times, whilst effortlessly getting on the path to peace of mind. Stoicism is a timeless ancient philosophy which can teach you just that. Unlike many religious and new age thinking methods, Stoic teachings provide a clear road map on exactly “How” to think, not simply “What” to think. Thus giving its practitioners a way to better deal with the misfortunes and hardships they face.

James Daugherty is an intelligence expert & former CIA Spy who specializes in all forms of human behavior. But there’s one trait which is critical to a productive life, obtaining and retaining a pragmatic and stable mindset. A spy would be worthless without it. Daugherty is a huge proponent of the Stoic philosophies, as a result of being exposed to highly stressful and testing situations over the years. A Stoic mindset is not a luxury for a field agent, but a necessity.

Simple Yet Powerful

This book contains a solid overview of stoicism, techniques for implementing the stoic teachings within your life, and resources for more in-depth study. Depending upon your aim, after completing the book you will have either a brief overview and solid understanding of stoicism, or a solid foundation upon which to further pursue the work of a stoic. Either way, it’s worth the small amount of time and effort required to read this book.

A Good Introduction.

A good introduction to Stoicism. The first few chapters go in-depth with what stoicism is and the history before giving you a guide. There are great chapters devoted to emotional resilience.

Good introduction to this thought culture

For the novice, this is an excellent audiobook and an introduction in this approach to life. Thankfully the author provides an introduction to stoicism with a nice historical overview and how stoicism as today came about. This I found very helpful and also explains components of stoicism, such as a reliance on virtue, but also including happiness. The author does a good job of bringing up the tenets and encouraging the reader to think of examples in their own life or among their friends, when these tenets were adhered to. This makes it clear to the lestener that stoicism can easily be incorporated into every day life and also makes the lestener understand their own set of virtues that works for them and that can be and should be the basis for their approach to life.

Enlightening!

I picked up this audiobook on a whim, I've never contemplated stoicism and it's place (or absence) in my life. If I'm being completely honest, I may not have understood what exactly stoicism really meant. quite a self-help guide, it's more of a philosophy audiobook with tools readers can use the to unlock the keys of stoicism with. Broken into three parts, the first part was very helpful in breaking down the foundations and history of stoicism to get to its very essence, the second part was an emotional "tool kit," and the third part is more practical advice on how exactly to cultivate positivity, practice emotional resilience and applying the lessons of stoicism into your life to change your mind set and outlook on things you can't control. I learned a great deal and I was very pleasantly surprised.
