Die Entstehung von "Stine" dauerte von 1881 bis 1888. Immer wieder legte Fontane beträchtliche, teils mehrjährige Pause beim Schreiben ein, um sich anderen Werken zu widmen. Schließlich erschien 1890 der Roman im Verlag seines Sohnes Friedrich und wieder wie schon beim Erscheinen von "Irrungen, Wirrungen" löste Fontanes Werks einen Skandal aus.
Anders als bei "Irrungen, Wirrungen" in dem Lene Nimptsch ganz eindeutig Hauptfigur ist, finden sich hier gleich mehrere starke Figuren. Neben Stine ist ihre Schwester die Witwe Pittelkow vielleicht die heimliche Hauptfigur des Romans. Vordergründig eine Person mit derbem Berliner Kolorit ist sie ebenso amivalent und vielschichtig wie der alte Graf Sarastro, ihr ebenso pramatisches wie zweifelhaftes Verhältnis. Daneben räumt Fontane dem Geliebten Stines dem Grafen Waldemar, seinem Innenleben und der Auseinandersetzung mit dem preußischen Junkertum viel Raum ein.
