Unearthed with someone's long-buried inheritance, the victim seems to belong to the distant past - until new evidence suggests otherwise, and Karen is called in to unravel a case where nothing is as it seems. It's not long before an overheard conversation draws Karen into the heart of a different case, however - a shocking crime she thought she'd already prevented. Publisher's Summary
It’s the case that could make DS Alex Morrow’s career. A suburban home invaded in the dead of night and a vulnerable old man taken hostage. It’s a black and white case and it shouldn’t be hard to solve….
The two strangers who forced their way into the house demanded millions the family didn’t have and shouted for a man nobody had heard of. It had to be a mistake, and a bad one at that. But Alex Morrow can’t be depended on and the bosses know it. Working this case is tearing her apart and as it unravels, Morrow finds that the only people she can bear to see are the very ones she’s been running from for 20 years.

How could the performance have been better?
Better male voices. Almost caricatured male voices. I thought they were being played for a laugh initially. Quite spoilt what was a very good plot.
Was Still Midnight worth the listening time?

Narrator was pretty bad...
Stuck with it as good story but all her character accents were way ott and kind of odd. She sounded fine when she was just telling the story but the conversations between characters were just painfully awful at times

Such a struggle to listen to the story when you have a narrator who should be reading to children or not at all. The narration is just killing my interest in the story.

If Val McDermid tells you to read something....
What did you like most about Still Midnight?
.....you do! And she was right, I really enjoyed it. Good premise for a story, unfolded nicely with some good twists and turns along the way. Author paints her characters really well - love their patter. Hero is flawed but interesting - and will make a good long term companion. I enjoyed the performance by the reader too. I'm downloading the next book in series now.

Denise Mina's quality writing is brought to life by the reader in different character styles and with a spattering of humour. The reader seems to have coped well with many different voices and dialects. An enjoyable listen.

Comedy Voices?
A good book spoiled by the narrator. When reading a male voice she decends into a Chic Murray parody. It shows how critical it is to have a good reader.
