Summary
Bloomsbury presents Starside by Alex Aster. Read in duet narration by Vanessa Moyen and Anthony Palmini
Enter the enchanting and deadly world of Starside, where swords have magic and power isn’t inherited – it’s claimed, from No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Alex Aster.
Hundreds of years ago, a brutal war split a land in two. Starside is the realm of magic and immortals – the descendants of the gods, living in a power-rich paradise. Stormside is where mortals fight for scraps of that magic.
Every fifty years, the gates between them open, and fifty challengers are allowed to journey across Starside on a deadly quest for magic that can heal, grant wealth or extend life. Everyone has their reasons for entering, but Aris has only one: vengeance against the gods who killed her family.
Winning one of the fifty spots on the quest won’t be easy. An orphaned blacksmith’s apprentice, Aris doesn’t have the superior weapons of the heirs from the Great Houses. But the greatest swords, ones that contain power, are not inherited or bought – they are claimed, by both sides. And when Aris claims a great sword, it makes her not just a real competitor... but a target.
Countless dangers await on Starside. With a blade most would kill to take, Aris can’t trust anyone. Especially not Harlan Raker, the merciless and mysterious knight who betrayed her years ago – and who may now be the key to her survival.
But Aris is hiding a secret tied to her family’s death. And when it’s revealed, not even the gods will be able to stop what’s coming...
This is one book where I wished it wasn't in first person POV, because Aris' self identity or self delusions were so inconsistent with her actions that her inner monologue was pure frustration. It was like her thoughts had to make a certain word count because of the slow start to the book.
When Aris wishes to join the trials she suggests that she has three things going for her, smarts, speed and fighting skills, she has them in so little amounts, that it's more luck than anything that gets her through the selection process. Because her combination of overthinking actions and not thinking through things at all was painful to listen to.
The bigger annoyance than Aris' thoughts, was the absolute horrendous depiction of sword fighting / training. A long while ago I wanted to write fantasy and to do it justice I thought I'd learn how to sword fight, turns out I'm better at sword fighting than writing. So seeing sword fighting and training depicted so badly, it actually hurts and I nearly stopped listening.
The middle of the book was more interesting and thoroughly enjoyable, as more things begin to happen and Aris seems to mature or think a bit more clearly the more dangerous the situation seems to turn.
However towards the end of the book situations seem to be added for the soul purpose of adding a whole new set of characters which may or may not be important in book two. Because they were over explained in a sort period for the lack of role 95% of them played in the story line.
Overall this could have been a great book, fun concept, interesting worldbuilding, and nearly all the characters and action was enjoyable. And don't get me wrong there are some really great sections of this book that I loved.
But the entire time I could not fully get behind Aris, as I knew her whole reasons for entering the trials did not match her skill set, so I just spent the entire book anticipating her "level up" moment.
Nearly DNF, also not a standalone novel

The plot fits the genre with good and bad people/animals/reptiles and more. There is even a quest.
I hope there is more to come from this author. Such a well-thought - out book and well written. I wasn’t even peeved over the ending.
Definitely get this book!!!
