Under the streets of London there's a world most people could never even dream of: a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, and pale girls in black velvet. Richard Mayhew is a young businessman who is about to find out more than he bargained for about this other London. A single act of kindness catapults him out of his safe and predictable life and into a world that is at once eerily familiar and yet utterly bizarre.

Charmain Baker is in over her head. Looking after Great Uncle William's tiny cottage while he's ill should have been easy, but Great Uncle William is better known as the Royal Wizard Norland and his house bends space and time. Its single door leads to any number of places—the bedrooms, the kitchen, the caves under the mountains, the past, to name but a few. By opening that door, Charmain is now also looking after an extremely magical stray dog, a muddled young apprentice wizard and a box of the king's most treasured documents, as well as irritating a clan of small blue creatures.

Somewhere on the frontier between thought and reality exists the Discworld, a parallel time and place that might sound and smell very much like our own, but which looks completely different. Particularly as it’s carried though space on the back of a giant turtle (sex unknown). It plays by different rules. But then, some things are the same everywhere. The Disc’s very existence is about to be threatened by a strange new blight: the world’s first tourist, upon whose survival rests the peace and prosperity of the land.

Editorial Reviews
Publisher's Summary
A FAIRY TALE FOR EVERYONE.
THE ACCLAIMED, ENCHANTING FILM ADAPTATION STARS ROBERT DE NIRO, CLAIRE DANES, RUPERT EVERETT, MICHELLE PFEIFFER AND MANY MORE FAVOURITES....
At the dawn of the Victorian era, life moves leisurely in the sleepy village of Wall.
Young Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the beautiful Victoria Forester and, to win her love, vows to bring her a star they see fall from the night sky.
It is an oath that sends him over the town's ancient wall and into the mysterious land of Faerie - a world that is dangerous and strange beyond imagining....
NEIL GAIMAN.
WITH STORIES COME POSSIBILITIES.
Critic Reviews
"Gaiman's silver-tongued narration vividly brings this production to life. Like the bards of old, Gaiman is equally proficient at telling tales as he is at writing them, and his pleasant British accent feels like a perfect match to the material." (Publishers Weekly)
"A fairy tale for everyone from 'one of the best fabulists of our age." (Financial Times)
"Beyond all the borders that divide us, there is a place of infinite possibilities and pure magic. I think of Neil Gaiman as a writer who wears the key to that land around his neck - the key to Storyland." (Elif Shafak)

Fantastic, Fractured Fairytale
I'm not sure how he does it, but Neil Gaiman has the gift of telling a story in a straightforward commonsensical manner, without reducing any of its magic or sense of adventure. Sometimes when you read it becomes a chore that you have to labour through in order to get to the end to find out what happens. That never happens with Neil's writing. The journey is as much fun as the destination. This is a rollicking, romantic romp, full of whimsical settings and fantastical characters, including a cabal of evil witches who make Snow White's step-mother look like a kindly old tea lady in comparison. This novel reminded me that sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and chase that shooting star.

A ripper yarn
I loved the film, so when I found this audiobook quietly mouldering on Audible's catalogue, I took a chance and bought it. Ok, there's some pacing issues dealt with in the film that really improve the final stages of the narrative. But the book should be read as standing alone, I think, and as such reads as a great story in its own right. It is a great yarn. The author, Neil Gaiman does a really good job on the narration too. I am so glad I bought this book. It was a real find. I wish I'd discovered this writer years ago. I have to make a couple of criticisms though. Please work on the levels in the audio recording. I listen to books in the car and it is annoying when I have to keep lowering and raising the volume, even if it is only a little bit. And two or three times throughout the book there is the sudden incursion of a galloping, transcendental, new age chime thing. What is it for? It drowns out the narration for a moment. But otherwise, this is an excellent book and a great audio production and would be cheap at double the price.

Magical
I adored this, but I knew I would because I adored the movie. It was such an easy read (listen?), perfectly draws you into its world and Neil Gaimans narration was excellent. His voice is so easy to listen to and the character voices he does are fantastic at enhancing the dialogue without distracting from the story. My only issue is I wish it was longer because I never wanted it to end.

One of the best audiobooks I’ve experienced
Neil Gaiman brings his own book to life with his unique gentle narration. I’ll be listening to this again in the next couple of years.

A proper fairy story
One of my favourite books, expertly read by one of my favourite authors. Stardust is one of my comfort blanket reads when I'm feeling a bit down. A proper old-fashioned fairy tale in that it deals with sex and death - if you've read the original Grimm's fairy tales then you will know that this is completely traditional and like all fairy tales it's actually about growing up and finding out who you really are. Unlike traditional fairy tales it's also funny and quirky and full of references to other stories. Also one small, entirely, justified bit of swearing if that sort of thing bothers you.

Brilliant Listen BUT
Any additional comments?
I always enjoy Neil Gaiman and was happy to find one of his 'children's books for my daughter. Two sex scenes and the f word later and I think we can definitely say. While a fantastic fairy story it's not one for your eight your old to go to bed with. I have called Audible about their categorisation of this title.

Oh Neil, read my shopping list!
Neil Gaiman, reading his own work. Wonderful. I quickly fell in love with him as the narrator, I believe he could read my shopping list and it would take on subtle new tones of mystery, menace and magic. Such a pity more of his work isnt available, read by him.
A lovely, light fairytale for grown ups and superior to the film. Thank you Mr Gaiman

Stardust - a pleasure from beginning to end!
This is a complete pleasure! Neil Gaiman reads his own work beautifully, he has a particularly nice voice, and adds a nuance that is often lacking in audiobook narration. If you saw the film and liked it, then this fills in all the gaps. The ending is different to the film (and all the better for it). I even went out and bought a copy of the book!
So now I want to get more Neil Gaiman stuff, and sadly Audible don't have that much. Requests please for Coraline and Neverwhere....

Stardust
Fabulous to hear the full story, in the author's own voice. My only complaint (as I listen as I fall asleep) is that there are one or two incongruous sound effects plus an interview at the end that is louder than the main story.

Good Book BUT...
We have really enjoyed this book, we enjoyed the film and the book is better. My rather large reservation is that while we were listening as a family (it is under the children section) we had to stop it due to a couple of obvious sexual references which embarrassed our older daughter and caused unnecessary questions from our younger one. This would be more appropriate under a different section in the categories particularly with a film tie in which is appropriate for children.

Awesome! I'm really happy with this. Loved it just as much as the film! Yay!

A complete delight
This is a joy. Atmospherically read by the author, it just flows along in a rich and delightful story, full of twists and turns and underpinned by glorious imagination. Way more enjoyable than the film. It guarantees peaceful journeys if played in a car...!

A perfect joy from beginning to end
You can't get better that an artist presenting his own work! Neil Gaiman's voice brings his characters to life delightfully without overshadowing the story. The interview with Neil at the end was an unexpected pleasure and gives another perspective to his work and the creation of the audio book.

Great book with a weak ending
This is the first Gaiman book I have listened to. I found the beginning as bit slow, but it quickly picked up pace and I found myself wanting to listen to it as often as I could. It seemed to come to an abrupt and unsatisfactory end though, as if the author was a bit fed up with it and just wanted to wrap everything up.
The ending did not do justice to the rest of the book. It was worth listening to though. I am about to start listening to 'fragile things' so we'll see how I do with that!
