Publisher's Summary

Years before they became crewmates on the U.S.S. Enterprise, Commander William Riker and ship's counsellor Deanna Troi had a tempestuous love affair on her home planet of Betazed. Now, as their passions have cooled, the two serve together as close friends. Yet the memories of what passed between them linger and Riker and Troi remain Imzadi, a powerful Betazoid term that describes the enduring bond they still share. On a delicate mission involving negotiations with an aggresive race called the Sindareen, Deanna mysteriously falls ill...and dies. But her death marks the start of an incredible adventure for Riker - an adventure that takes him across time, pits him against one of his closest friends, and forces him to choose between Starfleet's strictest rule and the one he calls Imzadi.

Too Short

Any additional comments?

I would of prefered to listen to an unabriged verson of the book but it was good for an abriged verson. It would of been better if each audio chapter told what the chapter was while listing since the written book has Epilogue and middle and prolouge all over the place

Cut way down, but still pretty good

Any additional comments?

Not to bad, I guess I was very disappointed to find that this version was very cut down from the novel version, but overall still a good listen. Audio quality could have been better.

Horrible recording quality

The sound quality of this recording is horrible. Its all mid-range with no lows or highs. I had to turn the treble way up and the bass down to be able to make out the words without straining. You'd think they would put more time into this. Sorry Peter.

One of the best books in print and audio.

I first read this book in print as a teen and have listened to it, as an audiobook many times over the years. This story explores the earlier years before, commander William Riker and counselor Deanna Troi, served on the Enterprise together. William Riker is stationed on,Deanna Troi's, homeworld Betazed, and meets Deanna at her friend's wedding. Hilarity ensues once,Will, realizes he must attend it in the nude. Will sees Deanna and it's love at first sight for him, even if not for her,at least not that she will admit it at the time, but later,well.... It's funny, exciting, and sad at times. Jonathan Frakes,is a great narrator.I really love this book. This book has all of the best, things you could hope for in a great book, movie or tv show, action, humor, love and a little sadness too. It would have been a great,Star Trek, episode.I highly recomend it. Lastly,I agree with several reviewers that stated, that the audio level is too low. I have to raise the volume way up to be able to enjoy it and hear everything clearly. I bought a used cd version of this audiobook and it also sounds too low.

Nior/Romance/Naked

THE BEST WAY TO DISCOURAGE YOU IS TO ENCOURAGE YOU?
The story relies heavily on the shock value of a civilization that prefers nakedness. Not sure if it is the writing or Frakes stilted narration, that makes this sound like it is a noir style story. It was not a bad book and even I can last three hours, but it is pretty costly for three hours of only so-so story. If you want to know the background on how Number One and Counselor Troi meet, than it is a must.

I loved Star Trek the Next Generation, but will hve to admit that Frakes character was my least favorite. His narration is very much like the way he played the character on the show. Each sentence is a statement and there is no flow from one sentence to another. If you loved is character for other than his looks, (which you can't see on audio), then you will love his narration.

Twas OK

It was okay. I know that the story has been rated high for years by fans but it just did not do too much for me. Maybe it was the whole love story thing?

worth nothing more than white noise to be honest.

not sure if this was written before or after the end of season 7/cancellation of the series but there are a lot of things that dont follow the series storyline at all. ex crusher leaves Starfleet. the characters are out of character. the writing iffy.

Abbreviated

I loved this book. I have it in hardback and on my Kindle. I was disappointed in the abridged version of this audible version however. Not sure why certain parts were cut out, but it definitely affected my enjoyment of it.

Who wrote this rubbish??

This features worst writing I have come across since the last self-published kindle disaster I accidentally downloaded! Trite, cliched rubbish with tragic metaphors and ludicrously unrealistic dialogue.

Enjoyable

I did not think Jonathan Frakes was a really good reader until I remembered to adjust the speed from 0,9 up to normal :D This book is enjoyable, anyway, not because of his performance which was okay, but nothing of a special treat; and not because of the storyline itself - I am not a huge fan of tampering-with-time plots, but there were intricate, subtle and reflective stories in TNG - "Parallels" for example, maybe not a famous hit but memorable to me. "Imzadi" does not have much style or insight to talk about. But it still gives the nostalgic sense of coming home, as it always should be with tie-in books (especially if you have just finished watching TNG for the first time and do not really want to be critical). Perhaps a number of alternate homes, unbreakable and unmortgageable to carry in our hearts, is the main thing that TV shows can give us. With that, I understand Peter David wasn't ever involved in writing scripts for the series, although his novelizations were appraised. I should say that more than once the characters sounded different from how I remember them (Frakes's voicing unfortunately did not help). Nonetheless, it was nice to let Data, of all the crew, play his own part in the story and get, as well as the fourth pip to his collar, yet another touch of humanity to his character.

Poor recording quality

No problem with the performance or story - though an unabridged version would have been more enlightening.

The quality however is lacking, often echoes can be heard and loud hisses. I have this on Cassette which has better quality - still conveniently this version is on my phone 😄

Still have this on cassette tape...

... and still brings a tear to my eye. Always loved the relationship between these two and the fact there was so much depth there which was hinted at on screen. I love a happy ending and always imagined theirs!

sound quality terrible

this would have been more enjoyable but the recording sounds like it's been recorded with a toaster. add to this the echo and sound effects is was almost unlistenable. Jonathan frakes is enjoyable but his masculine voice did not fit with the female characters. I found myself being confused as to who was speaking.

Wonderful Audio Version of my Favourite TNG Book

This has been my favourite Star Trek TNG book since I was 11 years old and discovered I loved Star Trek. Peter David is one of my favourite Star Trek authors, and the way he intertwines Troi and Riker's relationship with alternate realities is pure skill. The pace of the writing never falters, even in this abridged version of the book. Shame it wasn't longer. The sound affects really add atmosphere to an already great narration.

Really great book if you like star trek.

I loved this book. The sound recording is a bit fuzzy and it's obviously an old book but if you like the Deanna and Riker story in the TV series you'll love this. It fills in lots of the gaps. There is a big sci fi element to the book but it is fundamentally a love story so some people might not like it for that. Personally I thought it was brilliant and listened to it pretty much in one go.
