Excellent tale of Enterprise's missing year
It's a long tale and sometimes a bit predictable, but a fun story that covers a long period of time. It takes a fair amount of time to flesh out the characters and make them real. The ending wasn't nicely wrapped up in a bow, which I also appreciate. Life is not like that.
Kudos to the reader. Mel Blanc would have been proud.

A definite fave
I absolutely loved this novel. I've listened to all of the Discovery tie in novels and while I've enjoyed them all, most were.... lacking something. This one, however, had everything I could have wanted in a Star Trek tie in: Sparks of humor and humanity, engaging plot, interesting aliens and alien cultures, space battles, witty banter, sci-fi techno babble, and much more.
Most important, though, were the Characters. Oh stars, how I love the characterizations in this book.
Pike was, imo, spot on. His tendency to shoulder everything himself, his loyalty to his crew, his reckless leaps with no regard for his own life. He felt very true to both Disco and TOS Pike and this book only made me love him more.
I LOVED getting to know Una better. I treasure every scrap of characterization I can get about her. I adore her pragmatism, her get shit done attitude, her loyalty to Pike, her intellect and down to earth attitude. She is such a joy and I hope to see more of her in the future.
And Spock....oh, Spock. Seeing a younger, pre Disco S2 Spock was both a joy and a curse. A joy, because I love the insight into how Spock's time as a young officer shapes him into the older Spock every one knows and loves. It's a curse though, because the stuff Spock goes through in this book sheds a whole new light on his trials in S2. And my heart aches for him more than it already did.
The friendship and banter, trust and loyalty these three have for each other was one of my favorite things about the book. Their interactions were gold and I enjoyed every minute I got of them. Honestly, I don't know what I'll do if we don't get their spin off series....
Beyond these three known characters, though, are the original characters. I greatly enjoyed every one of them-- even some I wasn't expecting to like! They were multidimensional, their motives were believable, their voices distinct. It's not often I get as invested in the side characters as I do the main ones, so this was a very pleasant surprise.
overall, I highly recommend this book. so much so that I've already gushed about it enough to my Trekkie friends that I've got 4 of them reading it themselves now. I also went out and bought a hard copy of the book, too.
It's got the Star Trek feel to it, promise, and you should definitely give it a go!

Star Trek Meets Starship Trooper
As an avid star trek novel reader I have to admit this is my first Star Trek Discovery novel and I love it!! As I said in the title Star Trek meets Starship Trooper (by Robert A Heinlein) I say this because the adversary that captures some of the crew are wearing mobile armor just like the soldiers in Starship Troopers and the enemies THEY fight are the arachnids of the Heinlein novel. Starship Troopers is my favorite novel and I have enjoyed this one even more because of that!.
I plan on listening to more of the Discovery series of books and hope they are as good as this one is.

Love The Enterprise Crew, Story is okay
I generally love Anson Mount’s depiction of Chris Pike. A compassionate and competent leader that isn’t perfect that depends on his team to make the right call. That’s a realistic depiction of a leader to me.
Unfortunately for me this story is just kind of meh. I liked how it explained where the Enterprise was in connection to what was going on with Discovery and the Klingon War, but the villains were just really linear and kind of dumb to be honest.
The best part of this book is learning about the enterprise crew and some of the members we might see in the upcoming Strange New Worlds show. There was definitely a lot of good depth to Pike and Una. And it also made me not hate Connelly as much after how much a d-bag he was when they showed up on Discovery in season two. Spock’s development to learning about the seven signals was also nice to see.
So bottom line... story is just okay, but the development of the Enterprise crew members was actually pretty solid.

Excellent
This was my first Star Trek novel. I'm a big fan of the franchise and decided to try listening to a novel. I love how there is much more time to get into the story and to develop the characters. I felt as though I got to know them as well as if I had watched a whole series of TV episodes. Robert Petkoff's narration was excellent and really helped to bring the characters to life and differentiate between them. Highly recommend it.

The Enterprise Wow
Excellent read! A prequel to Star Trek Discovery S2. from the perspective of Chistopher Pike and the USS Enterprise. Enormous story. Well realised villains. Loved the characters. A genuine Space Opera offered in the Trek style. Not a fan of the accents the narrator did on the audiobook - might just be me.
