"Stakkels mennesker" er Fjodor Dostojevskijs første roman, som han skrev, da han var midt i tyverne. Den lille brevroman handler om den fattige embedsmand Makar og syersken Varvara, som han har forelsket sig i. De bor lige over for hinanden, men alligevel insisterer Makar på, at de kommunikerer via breve.
