Die Initialzündung dazu fand bei einer nächtlichen Fahrt statt, die von der Vorbereitung einer Sendung im Erzgebirge über Dresden zurück nach Berlin führte. Im Auto saßen der Schauspieler und Kabarettist Manfred Uhlig, zudem Günther Hansel, der mit ihm die Sendung "Alte Liebe rostet nicht" von Anfang an moderierte, und der stellvertretende Redaktionsleiter Unterhaltung von Radio DDR, Wolfgang Bauer. Normalerweise hatten die drei sich viel zu erzählen, aber auf dieser Fahrt fehlten die Themen, über die man sich unterhalten konnte. Eher aus Langeweile und um die Stille zu beenden, sagte plötzlich einer: "Lass uns doch mal auf unsere Art darüber quasseln, wie die Stadt, durch die wir gerade fahren, zu ihrem Namen gekommen ist." Ein Wort kam zum anderen, eine skurrile Idee zur nächsten, die besten wurden schnell notiert, und so ist man auf äußerst produktive Weise munter geblieben, bis alle zu Hause waren. So entstand die Idee mit den humoristischen Namenserklärungen und wurde zum festen Bestandteil vieler beliebter Rundfunk-Sendungen.
