Story
It's been several years since Jess and Hannah Ballard foiled a cataclysmic prophecy that could have destroyed their fellow Durupinen, an ancient clan of women who allow spirits to cross between the worlds of the living and the dead. The girls swore, after the devastation and chaos they endured, they would never get caught up in the inner workings of the Durupinen again. They were wrong.

I celebrated when vampires were declared extinct. Those beasts had preyed on humanity for millennia, committing senseless, brutal murders. Like the rest of my colleagues at the Occult Bureau, I looked forward to a world where we could all sleep at night - where constant cover-up jobs were no longer required to keep the public calm and unaware. But the end of vampires wasn't the end of our problems. It was only the beginning.

Publisher's Summary
"The Gateway is open…."
These cryptic words wake college student Jess Ballard from a terrifying dream into an even more terrifying reality. Jess' life has never been what anyone would call easy; doing damage control in the wake of your nomadic, alcoholic mother doesn't exactly make for a storybook childhood. But now her world has fallen apart just when it should be coming together: her mother gone - dead under mysterious circumstances; her life uprooted to stay with estranged relatives she's never met; and there's something odd about some of the people she's been meeting at school:
They're dead.
Aided by Tia, her neurotic roommate, and Dr. David Pierce, a ghost-hunting professor, Jess must unravel the mystery behind her hauntings. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more danger shadows her every move. An ancient secret, long-buried, is about to claw its way to the surface, and nothing can prepare Jess for one terrifying truth: her encounters with the world of the dead are only just beginning.

Not the Book's Fault
I bought this book after seeing an ad comparing it to the Outlander and All Souls series. So my expectation was this would be a well researched fantasy novel supported by actual historical detail sufficient to make you almost believe the fantasy. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. This book is a straight out fantasy with no detail to lend even a hint of believability. And it should be properly labeled. It wasn't even classified as YA, much less teen or preteen which seems a much better fit. It certainly wasn't geared towards adults.
I realize this is the first book in a trilogy so the overarching plot line can't be revealed in too much detail. But there were gapping holes in the story that had to explained in order for the first book to make sense. And they weren't. Nor were many of the primary character's actions remotely plausible.
All of this said, it was not an enjoyable reading experience. But I don't blame the author as much as her publisher. Their promotion of this book set the bar far too high. If not for the ad I would have remained blissfully unaware of this book. It isn't a book I would ever selected if I had done a little research instead of relying on ad. And I know better than that. So it is my fault too.
But I think the author and the publisher would have been much better served if they marketed this to a younger fantasy market. Not people who enjoy well researched historical fiction with a little fantasy and romance on the side.

Better then I thought it would be..
I love the paranormal In fact I have not read a series that gets as close to the paranormal that I like as this one has. With ghost hunts and actual real life possible real world ghosts. and then it takes a turn... The turn takes it much more into juvenile fiction but I'll read the second one and see where we're headed I guess..
I didn't care for the audible narrator. I know it's a hard job but this one just wasn't my favorite.

Young Adult
The ending of the book seemed anticlimactic, but maybe that is just because it is young adult. I generally don’t read young adult fiction, but since i started it. The ending especially, not to spoil it seemed right on par for young adult.
The main character is late teen, but old enough to have been making more adult decisions. There are somethings that happen that gets her aunt involved that I don’t think her college would have because of HIPPA, but those are just a minor annoyance.
The writing wasn’t bad. The main character was fairly well fleshed out, but some of the others seemed pretty stereotypical, hence the three star rating. You have the room mate side kick, typical. The mean girl across the hall. Typical. Although the typical rescue scene with her is inconsistent as it appears to be implied that she is also into jumping into bed with little excuse. I thought we were going to find out that was an act, and right after she is at it again. Sort of what???? The author needs to work on her consistency. Maybe she is trying to make a point about date rape. But that whole thing was too easily resolved by the college. Like I said, which I think would have been a more complex issue. But, young adult. Let’s not get realistic for the kiddies.
Ok story, but doubt that I will bother to read the next two. I can pretty much guess what happens. It would be an ok read for a teenager. I was reading more sophisticated things as a young adult, but early to mid teen, maybe.

i really loved listening to this fictional book, the reader/listener finds out every part of this new world at the same tima as the main character Jess from the unfortunate beginnings to what transpires as she attends a new school.
Each scene brilliantly explained with the right amount of humour and emotion, i can't wait to read the next in the trilogy...
