Story
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

Story
From a young age, her life was defined by uncertainty—by trauma and strength, sadness and hope, terrible lows and wondrous highs. As a teenager she found the courage to speak up after experiencing awful and ongoing child sexual abuse. This fight to find her voice would not be her last. The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner is Grace's story, in Grace's words, on Grace's terms. Like Grace, it is sharply intelligent, deeply felt and often blisteringly funny. And, as with all her work, it offers a constructive and optimistic vision for a better future for all of us.

Story
We all have a soundtrack to our lives, songs that as soon as we hear them we're transported to a moment in time. As the youngest child, and only girl, in a family of creative types, Myf Warhurst grew up with the music in her. Whether she was watching Daryl Braithwaite on TV on a Sunday night or listening to the crackle of the needle across vinyl as Agnetha and Anni-Frid took her from rural Victoria to Eurovision, music has always shaped Myf's life. Later her love of music (and the realisation that a professional pianist gig wasn't part of the plan) would shape her career.

This book is not just about Emma's fall from the sky and how she learned to walk without ever regaining feeling in her legs but also about the beliefs and ideas that helped her survive.

This is the powerful, untold story of two of the three members of Silverchair, Australia's most awarded musical act. From their beginnings in Ben Gillies' garage, this trio of high school kids from Newcastle, New South Wales, became famous with their smash-hit single 'Tomorrow', setting them on a path to domination of the Australian charts, worldwide touring and fame. So much has been written about Silverchair over the years but very little has been said by the band's members.

For years, Amy Thunig thought she knew all the details about the day she was born, often demanding that the story of her birth be retold. Years later, heavily pregnant with her own first child, she learns what really happened that day. It’s a tale that exemplifies many of the events of her early life, where circumstances sometimes dictated that things be slightly different from how they might seem–including what is meant by her dad being away for ‘work’ and why her legal last name differs from her family’s.

Story
Linda Marigliano has built a career out of performing for other people. In her day-job as an on-air presenter or in her family home, she contorted herself into 'the cool girl' or 'the good girl', and struggled to ever truly switch off. As she repeatedly over-committed and sought approval in all its guises, she started to ask herself: Why am I like this? Combing through her complex relationship with her mother, the sense of duty within her extended Italian and Chinese-Malaysian families, and the twisting turns of both her career path and her love life, she noticed a pattern emerging.

But the backlash on social media was unexpectedly intense, and Alisha found her sense of identity completely rocked by a single comment: 'You are a bad person'. Determined to shake the 'villain' label, she returned to reality TV screens, and this time, she got a different edit.

Publisher's Summary
Told with empathy and searing honesty, Speaking in Tongues is a powerful coming-of-age story about questioning the life created for you and building your true self, one recycled brick at a time.
From the outside, Tom Tilley's childhood seemed ordinary. The first son of a pastor, he grew up in a beautiful country town where life revolved around football, his loving family and their Pentecostal faith. But behind church doors, a strictly enforced set of rules included a looming ultimatum: if Tom didn't speak in tongues, he'd go to hell and be outcast from his close-knit, devout community.
The older Tom became, the more he questioned the teachings of the church, especially around speaking in tongues. And the more he heard about his parents' adventurous lives before they found God, the more he wanted the freedom to make those 'mistakes' that the church forbade. Eventually, after years of suppressing his doubts in silence, Tom spoke up. Having the courage to do so came at a huge personal cost, leading to a decision that would take his family to breaking point. What happened next is surprising, and Tom's journey to independence will inspire listeners to ask what's true in their own lives and who they really are.

And all the people said, amen.
As an ex-revivalist, this was a wonderfully honest, heartfelt take on ideas and processes that remain important to me. The story is an excellent view into the world of fundamentalist Pentecostalism.
Courage matters most when it unlocks the same in others, and Tom’s voice will invite you into an intimate journey of awakening and may encourage thoughtful consideration of faith and growth, whether or not you hail from such ideological beginnings.

Definitely not a Hack!
Tom's familiar voice and gripping story are like an oodie for the soul!
I didn't want to stop, and found myself
ùstening in the driveway after work and in the carpark, late for work!
Tom's story helped me re-visit my own spiritual origins and near miss with the Revivalists.

A Powerful Story, especially for those of us who no longer believe.
I really related to this story as an ex-Catholic, although my experience seems light weight in comparison. Same themes though. Tom’s narration is very sing-songy, but you do get used to it. Worth the credit.

Disappointing narration
For someone who is famous for talking on the radio, I was pretty disappointed by Tom Tilley’s narration. It felt quite juvenile which very quickly got tiring. The story was interesting, but very basic writing with not much flair or self reflection.

Really interesting
I found this really interesting. It’s also great when you get to hear the person’s voice telling their own story, you could hear the parts of the story that Tom was very emotional about.
Having been raised in a Presbyterian church, and then straying from it during high school years, it really challenged my beliefs about what is Christianity and whether we truly “believe” in Jesus Christ. At Uni I studied Anthropology, which helped me to build an understanding of all organised religions, which is why I think Tom was drawn to journalism. The opportunity to build objective thoughts about religion, even if you “believe” is important.

Fascinating story
Even if you don’t come from a church background or have a strong religious interest, this is quite the story. It made me wonder whether Tom has thrown him into the experiences has had over the past 10 years because of, or in spite of, his upbringing. His frankness and honesty was wonderful to take in.
