About this listen

The Wicked Years continue in Gregory Maguire’s Son of a Witch—the heroic saga of the hapless yet determined young man who may or may not be the offspring of the fabled Wicked Witch of the West. A New York Times bestseller like its predecessor, the remarkable Wicked, Son of a Witch follows the boy Liir on his dark odyssey across an ingeniously re-imagined and nearly unrecognizable Land of Oz—a journey that will take him deep into the bowels of the Emerald City, lately abandoned by the Wizard, and into the jaws of dragons. At once a grim fairy tale and an uplifting adventure, Son of a Witch is a true wonder.

I very much appreciated the continued story from Wicked. I did not expect to be reading from Liir's perspective, however it was very interesting to see the characters from Wicked grown and withering away. I thought Gregory Maguire did a fantastic job narrating. Many more questions are left unanswered in this book, which leaves me excited to read the rest of the series.

This book nearly completely rewrites the history established in Wicked. The characters are cliche' and one-dimensional, often without a single likeable trait. The story is slow and any sense of interest is expelled by lack of tempo. The narrator is atrocious, with awkward pauses (almost like he can't smoothly transition from one line on the page to the next), terrible character creation, and no acting ability. All in all this book has made me decide not to continue this series despite really enjoying Wicked and wondering what was next. I'll read the plots on Wikipedia and be happier for not wasting any more time.

One-dimensional, unlikable characters, slow, and revisionist.

Loved Wicked but really struggling to enjoy this because the narrator, who is also the author of the book is reading it like an AI at times. He puts emphasis on words that make it hard to connect with the characters or see them as human. It has really spoiled it for me and therefore it’s hard to judge if the story is decent.
