High-powered businesswoman Lana Rubicon has a lot to be proud of: her keen intelligence, impeccable taste, and the L.A. real estate empire she’s built. But when she finds herself trapped 300 miles north of the city, convalescing in a sleepy coastal town with her adult daughter Beth and teenage granddaughter Jack, Lana is stuck counting otters instead of square footage—and hoping that boredom won’t kill her before the cancer does.

Story
When I first walked into Jake and Megan’s immaculate home, I felt totally at ease. Sitting in the crisp white living room, they held hands and talked lovingly about their baby girl, Fern. As the weeks passed, I began to think I’d made a mistake in taking the job. Jake was overly friendly from the start, watching my every move and always offering to drop me home, even though it was out of his way. And Megan seemed to take pleasure in telling me off in front of her husband, blaming me for things I hadn’t done.

Enjoyed but......
Enjoyed the story and narrator but there is the most annoying clicking noise on the audio which is distracting and extremely irritating- I had to stop and try again many times ... felt like screaming turning volume down but could still hear it - like a tap dripping - grrrrr

Can’t concentrate on the words for all the clicks and slurps
Professional narrators work hard to remove all the ugly mouth noises from their reads for a reason. What a shame the writer felt the need to narrate - sounds like she’s drowning in saliva.

Slow and An Annoying Heroine
I had high hopes for this book. From the get go, I found the heroine both unrelatable and not very bright. I love crime thrillers and I've ready many but I found this book both predictable and slow going.

ridiculous
Found the female lead so unbelievable and annoying. so much time spent on nothing yet the end wrapped up quickly in a neat little package. I laughed at how ridiculous some of the scenarios were and nearly gave up listening to it.

Riveting narrative and excellent performance
Excellent crime fiction which subverts many conventions of the genre. Loved how she challenged our perceptions of criminals. She forces us to examine our perspective of criminals as innately “ bad people “ or whether they are just ordinary everyday people who made a poor choice or fell into a series of difficult circumstances. Love that it’s read by the author herself; and gives a fresh take on the genre. Loved the characterization of the female protagonist as both strong willed / determined as well as human with many foibles. Really a great audio book which I couldn’t stop listening to.

Good Book
Fabulous story and the narrator was very good too. Just the audio itself had a constant clicking sound which was rather annoying and defused my enjoyment of the audio.

Gripping
As they come, I find audiobooks extremely hard to concentrate on. The two things that hold my attention are 1. An exciting, fast paced story line and 2. A good narrator. This book had both. Catherine Steadman writes beautifully and speaks equally so. The story itself was intriguing, different and captivating. Would highly recommend.
