I "Som svalen" møder vi den 8-årige Sine i fædrenehjemmet i Nyhavn. 16 år gammel gifter hun sig med sin næsten dobbelt så gamle sproglærer og får året efter, i 1791, sønnen Johan Ludvig. 1801, da P.A. Heiberg lever i landflygtighed, forvist for sine revolutionære ideer, skriver den nu 27-årige Thomasine til ham og beder om skilsmisse. Hun gifter sig med Gyllembourg, som dør 1815. Fra da af og til sin død 1856 lever hun som enke i sin søns hjem og skriver her sine noveller.
"Som svalen" bygger på dette historiske stof, men bogen er først og fremmest en roman om en intellektuelt og erotisk begavet kvinde, en mærkeligt nutidig person.
