Publisher's Summary
Winner of the Specsavers Crime & Thriller Book of the Year 2018.
Longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2018
On a stifling summer's day, 11-year-old Jack and his two sisters sit in their broken-down car, waiting for their mother to come back and rescue them. 'Jack's in charge,' she said. 'I won't be long.' But she never comes back.
Three years later, mum-to-be Catherine wakes to find a knife beside her bed, and a note that says: 'I could have killed you'.
Meanwhile Jack is still in charge - of his sisters, of supporting them all, of making sure nobody knows they're alone in the house, and - quite suddenly - of finding out the truth about what happened to his mother. But the truth can be a dangerous thing....

I loved this book.
Thos book really grew on me. I especially loved it's sly humour. Sad to see there were a number of production errors with a number of lines being repeated.

laughed, cried, was terrified... utterly compelling. I am obsessed with these characters! Bauer is brilliant.

Not snappy enough?
A good crisp concept, well told. I lost patience with protracted reveries indulged for main actor, drawn out unnecessarily. Otherwise great believable characters

Loved it
At first I was put off by the overly dramatic narrator voice but I soon stopped noticing and became entranced by the story. A great read/listen, highly recommend.

Well crafted characters, but not ideal as an audiobook
This book delivers lots of tension and a well-developed, simple plot line, but I think it would have worked better on the page than as an audiobook. Sometimes there were switches in tense or perspective that were confusing and I had to rewind and listen again to see if I’d missed something - I hadn’t. Still, overall a good story.
