The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. Of course, that's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers (or NPCs) to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

All Systems Red is the tense first science fiction adventure novella in Martha Wells' series The Murderbot Diaries. For fans of Westworld, Ex Machina, Ann Leckie's Imperial Raadch series, or Iain M. Banks' Culture novels. The main character is a deadly security droid that has bucked its restrictive programming and is balanced between contemplative self-discovery and an idle instinct to kill all humans.

So she is bitterly disappointed when the first images are obscured by a kind of veil that prevents any insight. She works obsessively to find a solution, but when she finally succeeds in lifting the veil, she sees something that would have been better kept hidden...

Editorial reviews
Publisher's Summary
Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel. Read by William Hope, Christopher Ragland, Andy Secombe, Charlie Anson, Eric Meyers, Laurel Lefkow, Liza Ross, William Hope, Adna Sablyich and Katharine Mangold.
Deadwood, USA. A girl sneaks out just before dark to ride her new bike. Suddenly the ground disappears beneath her. Waking up at the bottom of a deep pit, she sees an emergency rescue team above her. The people looking down see something far stranger....
We always look forward. We never look back.
That girl grows up to be Dr. Rose Franklin, a brilliant scientist and the leading world expert on what she discovered. An enormous, ornate hand made of an exceptionally rare metal which predates all human civilisation on the continent.
But this thing...it's different. It challenges us. It rewrites history.
An object whose origins and purpose are perhaps the greatest mystery humanity has ever faced. Solving the secret of where it came from - and how many more parts may be out there - could change life as we know it.
It dares us to question what we know about ourselves.
But what if we were meant to find it? And what happens when this vast, global puzzle is complete?
About everything.

Lower shelf sci fi
Interview subject X114-3.
Location: Guantanamo dunny #511
Do you like made up, pseudo military code numbers to make you feel like you’re deeply embedded?
Then you’re in the right place.
No seriously. It listens like a bad radio drama not withstanding the amount of effort made by the voice actors.
I did finish it but would not go further. I like less cheese and more brain with my sci fi.
If you’re looking to pass the time on a long flight then maybe. But if your looking for trail blazing, eye opening, sci fi then move on.
This does sound harsh but the only reason I got this book was on the back of the reviews so this may stop someone else making the same mistake.
Asimov, Clarke and Banks are a couple of shelves above if you’re looking.

Clever, Cryptic and Creepy
I loved this. The ongoing reports of a scientific project constructing a giant, humanoid robot apparently left on earth by aliens. The narrative is structured into reports and interviews surrounding the project, performed magnificently by the cast. Covering a whole spectrum from aliens as mythic inspirations, complex human drama of a tight knit crew and international relations, this is definitely one of my most satisfying reads.

Intriguing SciFi
I was unprepared for the 'report' style of this story and that it is a sci-fi. Having said that, it's a complex and intelligent narrative. I think it would make a great movie too. I will be interested in read book 2. If you're interested in whether we are alone in the universe, I think this story will intrigue you too.

Voice acting is hit or miss
Pretty breezy listen with an intriguing plotline, unfortunately only about half of the voice acting is exceptional with the other half being absolutely atrocious and hammy. The main female lead is insufferable, poorly written and highly overacted.
