Publisher's Summary

The long-awaited, inspirational guide to life for a generation of black British women inspired to make lemonade out of lemons and find success in every area of their lives.

Black women today are well past making waves – we’re currently creating something of a tsunami. Women who look like us, grew up in similar places to us, talk like us, are shaping almost every sector of society.

From education to work to dating, this inspirational, honest and provocative book recognises and celebrates the strides black women have already made, while providing practical advice for those who want to do the same and forge a better, visible future. Illustrated with stories from best friends Elizabeth Uviebinené and Yomi Adegoke’s own lives, and using interviews with dozens of the most successful black women in Britain – including BAFTA Award-winning director Amma Asante, British Vogue publisher Vanessa Kingori and Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis.

Slay in Your Lane is essential listening for a generation of black women inspired to find success in every area of their lives.

I want to gift this to every black girl I know

Listening to this book made me realize that I need the physical book in my life. This is a book every black girl needs to read and keep on her bookshelf. Even though it’s written trough a U.K. perspective, it’s very relevant to black girls living in Belgium, The Netherlands and other European countries as we face the same problems. A special thanks to the writers

Incredible

As a young white woman I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although not *for* me, i think it is crucial for all white people to educate ourselves about racial bias and systematic oppression. This book gives insight into the experiences of black British women (from education, workplace, to media and healthcare), their challenges and difficulties but also gives optimistic and inspiring life advice. I urge all white people to read this in order to learn and understand how our white privilege plays a detrimental role in the lives of all non white people.

Misleading title

Good idea, however nothing really “biblical” about the book. Meaning, I expected there to be some attempts to provide some principles, solutions or lessons that could help young black women, or Some ideas on how to slay in our respective lanes. However, this was pretty much a dissertation - perhaps a first draft - filled to the brim with plenty interesting facts and figures but no linear message. There was also nothing really uplifting about it. I think this is probably best for non-black people or very young girls who are trying to understand the discussion on race/black women or looking for ways to articulate their feelings. Nonetheless I hugely respect the effort and idea behind it, was glad to support and greatly look forward to both author’s future endeavours.

Recommend to the group chat

A great book that came out just in time for graduation! Insightful guide that takes you from school to uni through to work. Whilst also taking into account relationships and health. The authors amplify the voices of incredible black women and have created an truly necessary, useful and practical guide. I recommended it to the group chat after the first chapter and continue to suggest it to all my friends.

Everyone should read this

I liked this book. It was very hard to listen to it at tomes. I felt angry and upset at times. However I got through and felt better and I am glad I stuck with it. As there is pretty key advice especially regarding mental and physical health and hair products. They do not mince there words or sugar coat the truth it is honest and upfront but without honesty you don’t get anywhere.

Finally a book that I can relate too

I laughed, cried and gasped at some of the harsh realities black women face. The authors use studies and research to back up any opinions. The interviewee's are current trail blazers based in the UK and are women that I admire. It was great hearing their viewpoint as british women as my experiences growing up were very similar and I hope to achieve what they have. I feel the next book could be based on the authors own research investigating the gaps in studies identified in this book.

Thank you

This was an awesome read for a multitude of reasons but my personal favourite was that it armed me with names. New heros to trail. Black British people to look up to and follow. It provided a more contemporary and up to date list of great black British people where David Olusoga’s book black and British provided more historical figures. It really is a bit of a black girl bible particularly to young women starting out
