Der dänische Theologe, existentialistische Philosoph und Schriftsteller Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855) schreibt in seinem unter einem Pseudonym veröffentlichten Erstlingswerk "Entweder - Oder" von 1843 insbesondere über die Liebe.
Im vorliegenden Kapitel geht es Kierkegaard um Don Juan als sinnliches Genie. Seine ästhetische Analyse spürt hierbei der Persönlichkeit und Idee dieser klassischen Figur des Verführers von 1003 Frauen nach, nicht ohne dabei zu tiefen und überraschenden Einsichten zu gelangen. Im Fortgang der Darstellung kommt Kierkegaard u.a. auf das Verhältnis von Don Juan zu Faust und Herkules zu sprechen, auch erklärt er, weshalb Mozarts Oper "Don Giovanni" von Don Juan die vollkommenste Vorstellung gibt.
