"There’s nothing there." The words may as well have been a death sentence to young Declan. Without mana, there could be no studying at the sky-piercing Pinnacle Towers, there could be no great monster hunts, and there could be no following in his father’s legendary footsteps. He’d be a cripple. But when a terrible accident forces him to flee, Declan learns the true nature of his mana. Just because it doesn’t resonate at any known frequency doesn’t mean it isn’t magic. Just because he can’t cast the same spells as everyone else doesn’t mean he isn’t a mage.

The end of the world is non-negotiable. How it happens is still up in the air. Ryan Smith was a boring guy. The only remotely interesting thing about him was the man in a suit that no one else could see. Always watching, always taking notes. Why? Because it's Ryan's job to supervise the end of the world. As the newly appointed guardian of a nanoverse, an object that gives him the power of a god, it's up to Ryan to try and save humanity, even though he can't save the world. Running on the world's fastest quantum computer is a very special game: one where retirees leave their flesh-and-blood lives in search of endless adventure. Weapons, spells, gold, experience points.... These are the marks by which life is now measured. Ethan Crane wants none of it. In fact, he never wanted to retire at all, let alone play a game for all eternity. But now he's on a mission to find his wife - a wife he just discovered is still alive and inside the game. Nothing will stop him from reaching her. Not even himself.
Publisher's Summary
After another long day at work, all Jon Christensen wanted was a cheap burger and some peace and quiet.
When he pulled into the McDonald’s, Jon only had the usual cares on his mind. His sister. The bills. A career with seemingly nowhere to go.
But after a confusing encounter at the cash register triggers a violent episode in the parking lot, he’s quickly pulled into a world he doesn’t understand. His few careless sentences - and the odd gift of languages he’s kept hidden for years - wind up thrusting him right into the middle of a chaotic magical free-for-all, a battle taking place in the shadows of society. Entangled in an increasingly complex web of violence and lies, he's left with a choice: adapt or die.
Surrounded by strangers, Jon must struggle to survive, searching out friends amidst a sea of foes. If he can get his group of strays and rejects to work together, there’s a chance they might just make it out alive.
Should he fail, the consequences will be dire - not only for Jon, but also for those he loves.

Not engaging
I didn’t find myself invested in this story. It was difficult to to connect with the characters. Took forever for the plot to move along & get interesting. The writing itself was also repetitive when describing situations. I had high hopes when purchasing as the concept in the blurb was interesting but was let down over all.

Annoyed my friend by raving how good this book was
I feel like the real highlight is that this Narrator is an absolutely perfect fit for this book. The tone for the story is on point and vivid the entire time. He brings these characters alive and makes every single one of them believable. I honestly just want to repeat the word perfect again and again when I think about describing the narration.
The writing is fast paced and you, along with our protagonist, are tossed right into the deep end from the start. We find a small yet fascinating sub-culture revolving around objects of ancient power, that manages just barely stay out of sight to most mundane people. It is a harsh and dangerous existence for anyone lucky, or unlucky, enough to bond with one of these varied Relics granting special abilities (all of which managed to be pretty cool so far). Our protagonist struggles constantly to find a safe existence for himself and the allies he collects when no one else is fond of rogue actors trying to stake a claim for themselves.
I believe it will keep most people excited and entertained for the whole length.

A promising start, but needs polish
So I'll give this a 3.5 story and a nod as a promising start. I like the premise, especially the hints and bits of story it seems are taking shape. It will be interesting to see how the main character solves his assorted moral quandaries. BUT.. I knocked 1-1.5 stars off as I think this could be TONS better if it were paced out differently. It drags in several places (for instance it takes 4 hours or so before it really starts to get out of what I would consider the prologue).
The narration itself is decent but neither is it the best I've heard between 3-4 varying throughout. If the narrator had done some of the flourishes he did in a couple portions of the story with one of the characters throughout it would I think be closer to a 4.25-4.75 for narration.
Overall about a 3.75 or so rounded to 4. Looking forward to the next book.

Great concept, but ...
I wanted to love this book. Heck, I should have loved this book. It had so much going for it. A great concept. (ancient relics that grant magical/super powers to people) Excellent narration delivered by the talented Andrew Tell. Unfortunately the story is a rambling mess. The book is nearly 26 hours long, which in itself is not a problem. I love long books, whether I am reading or listening, but the story is just a rambling mess. There are huge number of chapters where nothing happens, no character development, no action to advance the story. What we get is a running interior monologue from the main character. Every thought that pops into the characters head we are give. In the middle of an action scene the action will actually stop as we get 4 pages of the main character analyzing what is happening, with him repeating himself over and over and over. There are also odd instances where the main character will pat himself on the back for figuring something out that he was clearly told much earlier. Example? Sure. At one point the main character is questioning these two characters about what their powers are. The one kid flat out states that he is a mind reader. Ten minutes later something is said, and the main character is like "Ah, just as I suspected, He's a mind reader!" As you suspected? Suspected? You were TOLD that 10 minutes ago!. And things that happen repeatedly. As I said, the concept behind the story is great, but this book could really have benefitted from the author working with a developmental editor. This feels like a rough first draft where the author wrote out scene after scene, but then never went back and edited it into a tight story.
As I've said repeatedly I loved the concept, and as always Andrew Tell's narration was excellent (and honestly it was his narration alone that made me not give up on this one), unfortunately it just didn't come together for me and that's a shame. I'm actually quite sad as this could have been one heck of a series, which would have lent itself to becoming an excellent Netflix show.

RUN... from what?
So guy goes for food, drama ensues, he does not understand why... and the story continues but for a VERY VERY, to long, long time we do not know what is going on or what is happening..... BE QUIET but tell me stuff... Didnt I say be quiet... what?!?!?!
Ok now we know whats going on, sorta, and story goes on and on and on...
If you have time and like a slow burning novel with magic in the modern day, then this is great for you. I was listening to it when I was walking around shopping and going to the gym so maybe those were not the best places to listen?
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audio book by the author, narrator, or publisher, and it's my honest opinion because I read reviews as well and wanna know if a book is worth my time...

An unexpected, but most welcome surprise.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
With that said. This was something I was not expecting at all. To begin with I thought that the narrators tone was a bit too dark but within moments it proved to be most fitting.
I really enjoyed the interplay between characters, the snark and sass meters were going haywire throughout the story.
It had humor, action, a dash of paranoia and a sprinkle of magic. No brain splitting romantic interests for the MC. And a decent story progression that had MOST of my questions answered by the time the story came to its end. I have no gripes other than personal grievances over certain words pronunciation.
All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and I personally can’t wait to see what else the Author has up their sleeves. Kudos to the Narrator for giving the story its personality. 4 stars across the board
Give this a try. You won’t be sorry.

Very good start to the series
I received this book free at my request for unbiased review.
Great book, completely original take on modern day magic. I was enthralled from the start.
The narrator was spot on. Characters were distinct and recognizable.
The negative(for me) was the introspections. I love detail as does everyone, but the main characters pauses in the middle of critical situations were just a bit overdone. Again just my opinion and doesn’t change the fact I will be looking for the next in this series.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book. It was my pleasure.

Negative reviews are unfair
I got this book for free in exchange for an unbiased review.
I went into this book expecting to agree with the few negative reviews on this book. At the very least I expected the book to be a 3 star book. I was very pleasantly surprised.
The book is a great length. I wanted it to be longer, but not due to lack of content. The story and development were full and enjoyable. The world is relatable, and you can really imagine something like this existing right under your nose. Sometimes it felt like there was too much inner dialogue going on in the middle of a fight, but it wasn't unpleasant. The magic system is a little underexplained. It felt more like superpowers, and actually they made that comment in the book. But that wasn't a bad thing, it was still enjoyable.
I can see myself listening to this book again.

GIVE ME ALL THE SERIES!
First, I have to start off by stating that I got this book free of charge in exchange for a review, but as I always state, this does not in any way impact my review. My reviews are always honest and my own.
I am HOOKED on the Remnant series. LITERALLY. I normally prefer my fiction set in a fantasy or historical setting, the fact that this was set in current times didn't detract from the story. If you have an interest in books with a psychic overtone, then you would definitely enjoy it. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

This story does a great job of keeping you entertained throughout. Magic, teen angst and small town humor in a fast paced story. The only thing that I hope for the next one is more character development and less emphasis on the battles. Andrew Tell did a good job narrating the book.

A well written urban fantasy!
For a change I'm going to start by talking about the narrator. I always seem to talk about them at the end of the review. The narrator fits this book perfectly. He gives us a sense of pace that perfectly matches the story whilst vividly bringing these characters to life.
We have a fringe culture, maybe a sub-culture that's just under the surface of the normal world. Objects of power bond with people giving them gifts that could also possibly be thought of as curses given their everyday struggle for survival.
The plot is captivating and quite humorous and the book itself is quite unique in all the right ways!
Thanks to great characters and a well written plot I found myself immersed in the book and really enjoyed it from start to finish. It's both relaxed and full of life. I rally enjoyed it!

Good magical system and start to this series
This book was a bit mixed with the pacing, sometimes it was spot on with the amount of stories and characters, but at other times it did seem to drag and the overall duration might have been better if it had been shorter with a bit more ruthlessness during the editing phase.
However, despite this minor complaint, it should not detract from the overall quality of a book that provides an entertaining and extensive cast of characters, a well-realised world and an interesting system of magic. While Jon Christensen is the main character in the book, the supporting characters all contribute significantly and feel fully realised.
The narrator does a good job with this book, coping well with the task of making the extensive cast sufficiently distinctive from each other most of the time and keeping a suitable pace in what is quite a lengthy book.
Overall, this book did a good job of world-building for subsequent ones while at the same time providing enough story for it to also work as a book in it's own right and not just as a book one of a series.

Gripping urban fantasy
Overall this was a very good book. I did prefer the second half of the book a lot more. There was a section in the first half where there were quite a lot of people introduced at once and I got a little bit confused keeping track of them.
This book has an interest take on 'Magic' and I loved it when the system and history was explained later in the book. There is plenty of action and fights. As I said before I liked the second half as it was more group building, character development and learning creative ways to you use powers but that is more personal preference.
I like all the main characters and they were very realistic in their motivations and believable. From the way the book ended and hinted on the next book I'm really interesting in that one as it sounds like it's going to be more 'powering up' / getting stronger to defend what the group has built and the inevitable coming fights.
Very strong narrations that keep me on the edge of my seat on the action parts and gave all character distinct likeable voices.

Edge of your seat ride
A thoroughly good tale of hidden magic in a mafioso world. Very well written with lots of fast paced, tense battles.
Andrew is a great storyteller and would love to hear more from him too. Only negative is the distinction between some of the characters isn’t always obvious and I sometimes found myself lost as to who was speaking at times.
Definitely looking forward to the next books in the series though!
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.
