About this listen

When his longtime nemesis, the amphetamine-juiced killer known as "Upper" North, is spotted in England, Detective Chief Inspector Brock is on the trail. His manhunt centers on Silvermeadow, a huge and glittery new shopping mall on the outskirts of London, where North was seen. Lying in wait, he and Kathy Kolla take on a seemingly unrelated case as camouflage, that of a missing girl who had worked in the mall. But what to make of the rumor of other girls gone missing?

Coming up against dead ends, Kathy sets off to follow some leads of her own - and finds out that going solo can be very dangerous.

Editorial reviews

In this fourth book in the police procedural series by Barry Maitland, Scotland Yard's Detective Sergeant Kathy Kolla and Detective Chief Inspector David Brock investigate seemingly unrelated cases centered in the glittering Silvermeadow shopping mall. Fans of the series will enjoy narrator Angele Masters' superb characterizations - her Kathy has an expressive, frank voice, which contrasts well with Brock's more reserved, stoic manner of speaking.

Masters also keeps up the energy and pace of the story as the two detectives try to puzzle out the connection between an amphetamine-addicted criminal and a body found in the mall's trash compactor area. As he winds up the suspense, fans will be tempted into finishing the entire audiobook in one sitting.

Quite an interesting story but i can't deal with the concept of Essex cops having upper class voices.

Those publisher's comments about the great narration ("Kathy has an expressive, frank voice") can only have been written by an American/non Brit (or someone who hears upper class as neutral). To me it's tone deaf. The reader is not bad -- and would be perfect for the many books that are about upper class people but this just lacks credibility.

Posh voiced cops from Essex

This is quite an enjoyable story. Plenty of different going on to you wanting to hear more. Storyline fine with good narration.

An ok story

I am a fan of Barry Maitland and his London based Brock and Kolla series as well as his more recent trilogy set in very familar ground here in NSW Australia.
The blurb on this one was a bit misleading, portraying the case of the body in a shopping centre as merely an excuse for Brock and Kolla to chase down undercover a notorious bank-robber, whereas it was more the reverse. A diverse set of characters was well maintained throughout.
Recommended.

I'm a fan of Maitland, this did not disappoint

Ambitious plot with silly developments. And I found it hard to stay interested. The plot line with North was made mor unbelievable by the performer attempting a special voice. I think there is a lot to be said for narrators keeping the accents and special voices to a minimum. Keep it simple works best.

Not his best
