Publisher's Summary

Martin Scarsden returns in the sequel to the best-selling Scrublands.

For half a lifetime, journalist Martin Scarsden has run from his past. But now there is no escaping.

He'd vowed never to return to his hometown, Port Silver, and its traumatic memories. But now his new partner, Mandy Blonde, has inherited an old house in the seaside town and Martin knows their chance of a new life together won't come again.

Martin arrives to find his best friend from school days brutally murdered, and Mandy the chief suspect. With the police curiously reluctant to pursue other suspects, Martin goes searching for the killer. And finds the past waiting for him.

He's making little progress when a terrible new crime starts to reveal the truth. The media descend on Port Silver, attracted by a story that has it all: sex, drugs, celebrity and religion. Once again, Martin finds himself in the front line of reporting.

Yet the demands of deadlines and his desire to clear Mandy are not enough: the past is ever present.

An enthralling and propulsive thriller from the acclaimed and best-selling author of Scrublands.

Perfect follow on from Scrublands

Great book, but too many flowery descriptive passages,, found myself rolling my eyes and skipping minutes worth of ocean, cliff top and weather descriptions,,, it halts the flow of the story too much and isn’t of any substance to the story at all,, there were so many passages like this that it felt like he was adding them in just to get the word count up... apart from this , great story, great characters and kept me interested 👍

Great

Enjoyed listening to it. The scenery really comes to life. 4 stars as the story seems a bit slow at times. Worth persisting tho.

Too much going on.

This story is overly confusing. Too many threads to tie together. Several plot lines made each one superficial and lacked the emotive quality to really care about any one plot. Even the characters were plot driven which distances the reader’s emotional attachment.

Stick with it

Persevere with the first few chapters. It gets better and ends up being pretty decent, though not quite as good as scrublands. Mandy has become a terrible character. A real pain in the ass. Hope he doesn’t bring her back for the next one. Martin and the ASIO guy should team up and open a detective agency.

First & last.

enjoyed Scrublands, but not Silver so much. Struggled to finish it, very convoluted, too much waffling. My first & last audio book, much prefer to read a real book.

Thriller combines mystery with realistic characters

I enjoyed this book immensely. The plot is complicated enthralling and ever changing. The characters - particularly the lead journalist Martin Scarsden- are really well drawn and believable. They are empathetic and the listener wants to know the conclusion of the characters’ interaction as much as the murder’s solution.
