About this listen

Unlike people with carefree previous lives, I packed away my past. There are some memories labelled 'Look at' and others 'Leave well alone'....

Emily Smith was held in a prison of fear for 10 years. When she was four, her father left and a new man was brought into her life. He loved her, he kept telling her so, but the emotional and physical abuse she suffered at his hands were a daily nightmare. Until one day, after he crept into her bedroom, her life became unbearable.

Emily found she was different in another way as her autism became more noticeable and punishments for her 'abnormal' behaviour more severe. Astonishingly, she managed to escape her home of hell, where she was abused right in front of her mother. Emily determinedly gained a university place and emerged triumphant with a new life and family in Ireland, desperate to treat her daughter, so similar to her, to a different life.

Heartbreakingly true, Silent Child is a testament to Emily's strength as she sheds light on rampant abuse still happening today. Powerful and shocking, sharing her story means she finally has a voice to say: enough.

I finished listening to this book in two days, couldn’t wait to see how it ends after all those sufferings one child endured. Very well written and narrated.

Powerful

wow, it is hard to listen to. I found out I was autistic when my daughter had severe meltdowns and she was diagnosed.
both my parents turned away from me because they hated I was not like them.

my Nana was also the person who made me feel safe and happy but it wasn't my step dad father, it was an uncle.

thank you for your story

it's almost my life's story

I have never before hated a man as I do this one. Hate is a very strong word, I know but there is no other to explain how this story telling has made me feel about this. He’ll get what he deserves. I have never before been so emotionally involved as with this book. May your bad memories all die out, sooner rather than later and joy, peace and happiness rule in your lives.

I was there with you.

Wow just wow. What this poor girl had to deal with was so heartbreaking 💔. Nobody should have to go thought what she did.

So I don’t perhaps have the vocabulary to explain myself correctly but I’ll try my hardest. This story was fascinating and when you reach the part. I don’t think the author was petty at all. I was frequently frustrated with the author but that’s easy isn’t it.
having been so privileged myself. I found it confusing that the story would junk back and forth between child and adult. I would personally have preferred to just stick to a linear timeline. Overall I’m glad the author made the right decision finally. And I wish them all the best.

Fascinating story

Amazing story, hard to believe some people live through this and their parents allow it. Heartbreaking.

Fantastic.

The author really takes you into her life. I couldn’t stop listening to her heart rending story. So glad to hear the positivity she finds at the end. Highly recommended.

Emotional, touching and so well told.

WORTH READING

I keep trying to listen to it and I can’t get into it. I haven’t finished it all yet, don’t think I will.

Bit boring

The story line of emotional and physical abuse of women and female children by narcissistic, manipulative, controlling male is just horrendous.

The narrator is great but frustrating and sad that it is so hard for characters to break free from vicious cycle of abuse.

Tragic story
