I årene op til udgivelsen af "Sidste fortællinger" (1957) arbejdede Karen Blixen på flere forskellige bøger, men endte med at samle dem alle i "Sidste fortællinger". Således falder bogen i tre dele; "Kapitler af romanen Albondocani", "Nye fantastiske fortællinger" og "Nye Vinter-eventyr". Med "Sidste fortællinger" blev Karen Blixen for alvor anerkendt som en af de helt store stemmer i verdenslitteraturen. Samlingen indeholder blandt andet "Det ubeskrevne blad", som af mange er blevet læst som nøglen til Blixens store fortællekunst.
