Story
Twelve-year-old Sophie has never quite fit into her life. She’s skipped multiple grades and doesn’t really connect with the older kids at school, but she’s not comfortable with her family, either. The reason? Sophie’s a Telepath, someone who can read minds. No one knows her secret - at least, that’s what she thinks.... But the day Sophie meets Fitz, a mysterious (and adorable) boy, she learns she’s not alone. He’s a Telepath too, and it turns out the reason she has never felt at home is that, well...she isn’t. Fitz opens Sophie’s eyes to a shocking truth....

Great for kids... fantastic for adults!
I started this book because my daughter was reading it. I had heard about it and had lots of friends who had read it but I never read it when I was little. I'm so glad I waited till I was an adult! It's a book that can't be fully appreciated until you've lived through childhood and can look back.
It's a funny, very dark (demonic dead rats and hints at cannibalism!) and very sweet love letter to the complicated relationship children have with their schools and teachers. If your school was simultaneously your torture chamber/place of comfort/social outlet - then you will relate to this book.
It also comments on the adult world. Each chapter serves as a fable, with lessons pointing out the absurd flaws of people and the institutions we create. By pointing out the ridiculous nature of our actions, the book is actually offering guidance about how to live better.
This absurdism also helps the book feel relevant, despite having been written decades ago. Because the stories weren't directly tied to social issues at the time of it's writing (all themes are shot through an absurdist lens) - the lessons become universal and could apply to any time period.
AND IT'S A FAST READ!
All together - I couldn't recommend this book enough.

Need a book for your commute with kids? This is a great one. Broken up into vignettes with familiar and funny characters, this book will make your 2nd-5th graders giggle and talk the whole way to school. As an early chapter book, it is also a great read-a-long for kids who need the extra boost.

Some of the stories were really quite funny and engaging, while others gave me pause as to whether I should continue letting the kids listen. Irony and sarcasm abound, but I wasn’t always sure they were “getting it” as it could get a bit dark.
