Summary

Set in the industrialising England of the Napoleonic wars, a period of bad harvests, Luddite riots, and economic unrest, Shirley is the story of two contrasting heroines and the men they love. One is the shy Caroline Helstone, trapped in the oppressive atmosphere of a Yorkshire rectory, whose life represents the plight of single women in the 19th century. The other is the vivacious Shirley Keeldar, who inherits a local estate and whose wealth liberates her from convention.(P)2007 Isis Publishing Ltd. Classics Fiction Historical Fiction England

If the narrator hadn’t been so good I might not have stuck with this. I think Bronte wanted to write a series of essays about a period of history and its effects on the North of England. It was educational, but not entertaining. Shirley didn’t turn up till around Chapter 12 and I’d started wondering if I was listening to something else. I often didn’t know who the characters were but also didn’t care. The story seemed to ramble all over the place and could have been half as long. But the narrator was excellent and so I really enjoyed listening to her voice.

Average story but excellent narration
