About this listen

Now in development as a feature film with Amazon MGM Studios, with John Wick screenwriter Derek Kolstad attached to write the script!

Shield of Sparrows is a slow-burn, high-stakes romantasy perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Rebecca Yarros—where enemies become lovers, monsters stalk a cursed realm, and a forgotten princess finds the strength to tear off her crown and become the warrior she was never meant to be.

The gods sent monsters to the five kingdoms to remind mortals they must kneel.

I've spent my life kneeling—to their will and to my father's. As a princess, my only duty is to wear the crown and obey the king.

I was never meant to rule. Never meant to fight. And I was never supposed to be the daughter who sealed an ancient treaty with her own blood.

But that changed the fateful day I stepped into my father's throne room. The day a legendary monster hunter sailed to our shores. The day a prince ruined my life.

Now I'm crossing treacherous lands beside a warrior who despises me as much as I despise him—bound to a future I didn't choose and a husband I barely know.

Everyone wants me to be something I'm not—a queen, a spy, a sacrifice.

But what if I refused the role chosen for me? What if I made my own rules? What if there's power in being underestimated?

And what if—for the first time—I reached for it?

Contains mature themes.

The book starts with great story lines and characters but loses some steam at the end. While the end is packed with lots of events it seems forced and falls a bit flat. Ending def indicates another book.

Great start but falls a bit flat at the end

I think I have found my new favourite author. Can’t wait for the next book. The story line is full of intrigue, plots and twists.

What a ride

I think the author has depicted the internal and external monologues of a FMC who has struggled with self doubts and anxiety her whole life really well. She yearns for a deeper connection, for someone who understands her and accepts her and sees her for who she is. She is full of curiosity, likes to yap and asks a lot of questions. I can see why some readers might find her annoying but honestly, I think she is relatable, real and quite funny.

The way the author describes the monsters, the places they visited, the people really help you paint a picture in your head.

I think the plots were somewhat predictable, some were very obvious but if you like to be surprised, I think you might still be surprised by one or two things. And even if you knew it was coming, i think you would still enjoy how it unfolds and comes together.

I haven’t read a storyline like this but in saying that, I have just started really getting into my romantasy books but the last series I read was the Empyrean series then I fell into a reading slump because lets be honest, who didn’t. I forced myself to finish a couple of books in another certain very popular series but I put the series on hold to read Shield Of Sparrows. Glad to say I’m not in a slump anymore! Finished the book in a few days.

Got me out of my reading slump

Thrilling all the way, at first I couldn’t stand the mfc’s incessant inner thoughts and questions but hang in there as it became one of the best reads this year.

Such an original story plot and characters

I went into this expecting much of the same given the comparisons and was so refreshingly surprised to discover a whole new and unique world and characters to love with twists and turns that come out of nowhere. There’s also humor and little splash of horror. The writing is superb and to learn this is the authors first (I believe) fantasy style romance made it even more amazing. I cannot wait for book 2 or however many books there will be and hope we do t have to wait too long as I’m dying to see where the story goes.
Single narration can be a little off putting (I really do wish every audiobook was duet) but I promise Samantha Brentmoor carry’s this off perfectly and was excellent and helped draw me in so well I couldn’t stop Listening. ooo to have Jason Clarke reading the MMC for the whole book would be a chefs kiss though.
Hello Book hangover 😅

Forget the Comparisons! This is something else all on its own

Oh I loved this book! In fact I listened to it twice. I absolutely can’t wait for the movie.
Thank you Miss Devney, take a bow…. I have read your stories for a long time now since The Coppersmith Farmhouse. This is a far cry from then and I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy this book because it is so different but I’m sure glad I listened to my own inner thoughts…..Trust! as this is Miss Devney.
So glad it did and now to wait patiently for the movie and book 2.

Fantastic narration, Samantha Brentmoor killed it! She tackled every character so well. Wish we had more Jain Clarke, hoping for more Random POV in the next book. Loved it, can’t wait until the second book is released!

So good, can’t wait until the next book!
