Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Shiang, by C. F. Iggulden, read by Daniel Weyman.

If these stones could speak, they would call for war.

In Shiang, the young king rules without dissent. Mazer swordsmen stand watch on every corner, looking for the first sign of rebellion. This city is a place of quiet and slow dignity, like a man eating rice with a razor pressed against his throat. Yet with one sharp movement, order is overturned. The balance of centuries is undone in the sudden spill of blood - and in the darkness, something terrible returns to Shiang.

Far to the west, four Shiang masters approach the city walls of Darien. The sword saint and his companions have crossed a continent to bring an old man home for punishment. They will not be denied, even if the whole city stands in their way.

Two ancient cities. One final war.

Wow, What a read! Hard to put down

While a fan of the author, not normally my preferred genre. But wow what a read. Exciting, captivating, curious and fun the whole way through. With interesting characters, plot twists and a spectacular world to explore. I highly recommend it to everyone.

good

perhaps it is simply that historical fiction by its nature is more complete or immersive than pure fiction, but though entertaining, the story is not as succinct nor the characters as compelling as igguldens typically brilliant offerings.

Fantastic new heroic fantasy

I can think of no higher praise than to say this series has strong echoes of David Gemmell’s Shannow and Drenai series.

An excellent adventure!

This story is full of well-developed characters and the plot is sufficiently complex to hold the interest. The narrator is excellent.

Not an ordinary CJI

Too much fantasy, not enough story. Here are a few more words so that I can reach the stupid Amazon restrictions preview length and record why I didn't like the book, as a personal aide memoir.

Masterpiece

It’s not very often the 2nd book of a trilogy out performs the first but Shaing bucks the trend. An absolute masterpiece of a tale that will have you gripped from the beginning to the last word uttered. Wow!

Brilliant sequel

Iggulden has found his feet with this sequel, colourful characters both new and returning make for great reading. The lore is also billed out somewhat, making the world even more intriguing. I’m definitely looking forward to book 3!

Sublime

This author does factual historical fiction stories brilliantly but when he gets to writing pure fiction the results are astonishing. The plot is great but the characters are so good you invest emotion into their part in the book. Sad I’ve finished it really.

Very entertaining and fast moving

Not my usual thing but struggled to turn this off! Can't wait for the next book in the series.
