Publisher's Summary

The shape of ancient evil

A series of grisly murders rocks London. At each location, only a jumble of bones remains of the deceased, along with a bizarre sphere covered in strange symbols. The son of the latest victim seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and his former partner, Dr. John Watson.

They discover the common thread tying together the murders. Bizarre geometries, based on ancient schematics, enable otherworldly creatures to enter our dimension, seeking to wreak havoc and destruction.

The persons responsible are gaining so much power that even Holmes’ greatest enemy fears them - to the point that he seeks an unholy alliance.

Utter garbage

I’ve read and listened to over 100 books and this was right up there with the worst.
I would call the ending a massive anti climax but there was no real build up anyway.
Sherlock Holmes fans will be bitterly disappointed.

I was dubious but then so impressed!

Well done. A great blending of mythologies. Very well read. I didn't know at first that there are more in the series so I was pleasantly surprised upon completing the first book and now the adventure continues!

Doesn't sit well within the Cthulhu Mythos

I kept asking myself throughout this book, does Holmes even like Watson? He seems to treat him very poorly and Watson falls into the routine of second guessing himself all the time and is a very weakly portrayed character. The references to Mary and Samuel, Dr Watson's wife and child are so out of place. They feel like an attempt to bring about a sense of dread to what fate might befall Dr Watson's family. Yet all that seemed to do was give the Dr a brief "oh dear my family, I'd be lost without them" moment and then they are forgotten about for the majority of the story.
Trying to bring the Cthulhu Mythos into London, didn't work for me at all, at least in this story. It was clumsy. The consistency of the vocabulary was not always consistent with time period. It also seemed overly violent, that did not work for me either.

The story over all was not badly written, I just didn't feel as though it was quite the right mix of vague eldritch horrors that fans of HP Lovecraft are used to. Dennis Kleinman, the narrator, as always performed brilliantly.
